    perfect 8ch line-to-ADAT conversion, both directions.

    This is a fantastic unit, powerup and forget. Used mine for 15yrs, never had even 1 issue !... amazing. Good dynamic range on conversion, clear front panel indication of signal presence [green] and clip [red] LEDs. Rear panel has the jack i/o and the ADAT i/o. Simple 1u design, silent, does not heat up even when left on permanantly. Highly recomended. All i/o are available as mono i/o or stereo pairs, or a combo within the 8ch.
    -10db or +4db operation front panel switch.

    OVERALL OPINION

    I've had it for 2 years, it's awesome!!!!!
    I haven't had the chance to test any other DACs, but this one is very practical
    You can plug in ADAT and come out in a 1/4" analog jack
    Regarding the converter itself, personally, I have nothing to say, it's very pro
    Coupled to a motu 896, you just turn it on and that's it
    Based on my experience, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.

    With an RME 96/32 card with a dual-processor G4 running Logic, MAc OS X
    I used to have a DIGI 001 under OSX, ugh! I had the opportunity to work quite some time with Sonic Solution, so I certainly have a good point of comparison...
    It's great, not expensive.
    I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again
    But there's a catch: Don't EVER turn it off, the first day you use it, it sounds somber and lacking definition...

    The next day it's as good as the RME, with 450€ converters.
    So, don't turn it off.
    Even if it doesn't have the prestige of a Lynx or an Apogee, this converter sounds good..... with an RME you get 10 ins and 10 outs for 1000 Euros.

    Regarding the conversion quality, the Ai3 is way better than the Hoontech. More well-defined and less "metallic." I can't say how it compares to other hardware, because I would have to test it under objective conditions, same mic, same source, same preamp, same monitors...

    But my first tests are pretty conclusive in terms of quality.
    The converter is limited in terms of connection options but it will allow you to make the best of older hardware because it supports up to 48kHz max., which is why you can still get it at reasonable prices.

    If you don't want to go beyond 48khz at 24bits, it's a very good solution.

    It deserves a high mark (9), due to its price and quality, the only point I'd take off is due to its dated(?) possibilities.
