I will never buy a Gibson, because I think their non-custom, factory-made guitars cost at least 2x more than they should because of the brand name, alone.

On that note, just wondering if anyone here can suggest some really great basses that play better than their price tag but aren't well known or produced by household brands? i.e. something that cost under 500 bucks but doesn't have the "brand name markup"

Peavey T-40. It's probably slightly more than 500 now, but a fantastic bass.

For the money I would take a look at the Harley Benton HBZ line of basses. Great basses within this budget
