Versatile and Classy

Gibson ES-339 30/60 Slender NeckPublished on 09/20/12 at 17:47
The Gibson ES-339 is a great sounding, fast playing member of the ES series of guitars. It has the typical arrangement of triple ply maple and poplar body, complete with a mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard. The electronics are standard fair for Gibson as well-- A pair of '57 classic humbuckers wired to independent volume and tone pots with a three way toggle. The antique red finish is beautiful and has a timeless sort of vibe to it. Very cool.

UTILIZATION

The 60/30 neck on this 339 is decently slim and fast playing. Lead lines on the upper registers are unhindered with the 339's amply sized cutaway. The 339 has a good knack for rejecting unwanted noise and feedback with higher levels of gain. The 339 is around 2 or so pounds lighter than my les pauls, but it feels much lighter than the numbers might suggest. Tuning stability is pretty decent on this guitar.

SOUNDS

I Played the 339 through an Egnater Renegade and Mesa Mark V. Mesa Boogie 4x12. No pedals.

The 339 is a very responsive instrument. Clean or Heavy, the guitar maintains a sense of range. The aggressiveness of your pick attack will alter the sounds you get greatly. On the clean side of things, the low end is very warm and full. Arpeggios have sweetness and clarity. On the gain side of things, the guitar has less than ideal intelligibility when playing chords, but the 339 really blooms when playing lead passages. Solos really scream on this guitar and the ability to get controlled feedback so easily really furthers the experience in this regard.

OVERALL OPINION

The Gibson ES-339 is a great crossover for players who enjoy either les paul's or the more closely related Es-335. You get a lot of versatility from this instrument. Blues, Rock, Metal, It doesn't really matter. The guitar does have it's own voice that you may or may not fall in love with. For the asking price, you're getting a beautiful, well made instrument that is bound to hold it's value for a long time.

Gibson ES-339

Gibson ES-339 30/60 Slender NeckPublished on 07/02/10 at 15:00
I'm in my 50's and have seen and played my fair share of some fine axes. I usually play classic rock, blues and a bit of country. I play out a bit but mostly am a hobbyist. My Es-339 ,purchased from GC is, in my case, all around excellent. The neck is so straight I brought the action down to almost nothing with no buzz or fret noise. Fit and finish are top grade, smooth and clean everywhere. The tone is just short of an LP's and a 335's - in a good way. Sustain, tone and depth galore. This guitar is well suited for almost anything. Gibson has answered the pleas of the common player, versatility and tone at a truly affordable price. Free at last, free at last . . .

I bought it at GC after comparing LP's, Strat's and tele's. I paid 1799.00 less 15% special with a year to pay with no interest and it's worth every penny.

comfortable
payablility
depth of tone
versatile
clean, clear pickups

met all my expectations - I won't nit pick small adjustable personal preferences.

Durable enough to gig with.

I wish they made it available sooner and publisize it more.

Gibson ES-339

Gibson ES-339 30/60 Slender NeckPublished on 11/08/08 at 15:00
I've played guitar nearly all my life. Dabbled in piano, tried drums, been in some garage bands, play harmonica, etc. I guess you could say I'm a jack of all trades and master of none. Especially considering I'm so on and off with playing that I never really got past a certain point with my skills, but I can still hold my own. Oh well.

I bought this guitar at Guitar Center in Robinson Twp. PA. It was about $1800. I had been saving for a while for a new guitar and wasn't sure what I wanted, but when I saw this ES-339 I could not resist.

Tone! Tone! Tone! And that's not Toni, Tony, Tone.. I mean sound quality and lot's of it. This semi-hollowbody has a sweet rich tone with a lot of sustain and is easy to play. The thin but large body rests nicely on the lap and is easy to control when you're sitting on a stool or some other awkward position which is a pretty common thing when you're having impromptu jam sessions.

Honestly, I bought this guitar because it has a real classic look, feel and tone to it, but I'm not thrilled with the paint job. Even though that's petty, if I would ever do anything to this guitar, it would be to give it a face lift. I've always liked those darker quilted cherry looks with the golf humbuckers. But I'll live with it for a while, because the Tone! Tone! Tone! is worth it. :)

Construction and quality are first rate. I'm assuming that Gibson's are still made right here in the old U.S. of A, so everything is heavy, solid, and finished well. Plus, it's a Gibson, and that says a lot about quality right there.

In summary, I would say that I didn't really get a deal on this guitar - but I wasn't looking for one. I wouldn't even say that the price versus value is competitive, but it's a Gibson - what do you expect? It will probably become a classic and be worth lots of money, haha. At any rate, the best feature of this guitar is it's excellent tonal characteristics and if anything was worth the $1800 paid, that was it. Bravo! Gibson for creating yet another masterpiece.

UTILIZATION

Whoa! Gibson is really onto something here. They've had the ES-335 for a long time, since about 1958. While that truly is a great guitar, it has a rather large body. A few years ago, some genius at Gibson decided to make a scaled-down version of the 335, but keep the neck at the proper length. Thusly, the 339 was born! All the good things one would expect from a high end Gibson - great craftsmanship, gorgeous finish, solid hardware - it's here. The playability is very nice - it's the 30/60 neck, which means it's akin to the neck carve of their 60s models, yet with an extra three hundredths of an inch added on for more resonance.

SOUNDS

This gets a ten. A solid, perfect 10. The 339 has a very sweet tone - sweet as a baby eating chocolate ice cream. The overall resonance of the guitar is very pronounced - this axe vibrates in your hands, and you can FEEL every note. The F-holes allow the acoustic sound to project more when unplugged, but the magic is in the plugged in sound. These pickups are wonderful! I've always loved the '57 Classics from Gibson, and these pickups are the perfect combination for this guitar's body. Rock, blues, jazz, funk, whatever - it all lives inside this axe.

OVERALL OPINION

Breathtakingly good. I'm so impressed with this guitar. I'd have given it a ten if it was just a bit less expensive and had better inlays, like split parallelograms. Gibsons can be a bit pricey for what they are, especially for something like a Les Paul. However, this one is still priced very well for the quality of guitar it is. I'd recommend anyone try this baby out!
