Hatsubai « Great LP for the price »
Published on 09/27/11 at 07:18For those who don't know, Edwards is a division of ESP. The bodies are made over in China with wood that ESP supplies them, and they're finished over in Japan by the ESP luthiers. While they're not quite as high quality as a normal ESP, they're roughly on par with the LTD series. The guitar has the following specs:
Mahogany body with a maple top
Mahogany set-neck with an ebony fretboard
22 frets with Gibson-style inlays
Tune-o-matic bridge
Seymour Duncan 59 in the neck and JB in the bridge
Two volumes
Two tones
Three way switch
UTILIZATION
The guitar was very solid. It didn't weigh a ton, and I'm always a big fan of guitars that don't feel like boat anchors. The fretwork on this was pretty solid. Unlike most normal Gibsons, this doesn't have binding nibs. Some people might dislike that, but I actually tend to prefer it. The fretboard must have been slightly dyed to keep that super dark ebony look because some of the dye was coming off on my fingers. Over time, that would go away, but it's slightly annoying. The fretwork was pretty good, but it's not quite as nice as an ESP. It's roughly on par with a Gibson, I'd say.
SOUNDS
The guitar sounded very nice. The neck was a Seymour Duncan 59. These are wonderful for those fat lead tones and great clean tones. They're very versatile and can cover nearly any style from blues all the way to death metal leads. The JB is much the same way. It's a high output bridge pickup that can do nearly any style out there with ease. The bridge is great for blues, rock, metal and beyond. I also find they respond pretty nicely to volume adjustments via the volume knobs. The John Sykes model actually comes with Duncan Distortions, and they're pretty cool as well, but I tend to prefer the 59 and JB combo in these a bit better.
OVERALL OPINION
If you're looking for a guitar that can rival a Gibson, and you don't want to spend all the time and hassle looking for the proper Gibson, look into getting one of these. They're a bit more consistent than Gibson, and while they might not sound exactly the same, they'll get you close enough. They're a lot closer than the ESP Eclipse series, that's for sure. Definitely something worth checking out if you get a chance.
