Map 8 E analog mic / line XLR combo of good quality (with phantom power supply among 4).
8 analog outputs plus two monitoring and headphone. An I / O SPDIF. I / O wordsync. Up to 96kHz.
Typically a useful map to take pictures of her on-site or in a home studio with a quality satisfactory to all the working pro (the pramps are exploitable and take everything comparison with those of the console 100 000 I used for three years (tests with Schoeps, Neumann U87, KM184 ...)!

IMPLEMENTATION

Drivers for XP is exemplary stabitilt (after a chaotic First Version), I upgrad my PC beginning of year, I do not remember a single crash of Q10 from. All fawns, the crash are rare with my config (you can not go wrong all the time, we never advise too much to take Max prcautions when choosing the motherboard)
Cakewalk comes with the CD can be used to wedge a piece of furniture ...
4ms latency with my system, but may be-we can do better. (PC Athlon 2200+, 512 MB DDR Ram + 2x HD WD1200 SE, WD800 HD SE, RME HDSP9652, Sony DVD writer, Windows XP Home, Nuendo 2.1)

UTILIZATION

Easy to install but download any new drivers on the web (www.aardvarkaudio.com
If Windows 2000 or XP (those provided only works with w98)
the card may be the easiest job of the market.

GETTING STARTED

Excellent new drivers (for XP and W2000): 6ms latency with Cubase 5 and 3 ms with sonar!
dj I read about sixty tracks while recording eight others at the same time (with plugins not too heavy)
only downside: I waited six months for them to leave the new drivers (XP and 2000), but now they are the effective and trs.

OVERALL OPINION

For 8 months.
I used a lot of audio cards as Layla24, motu ... digidesign
but if these cards have an excellent quality of sound as pristine as the Q10 (by the clock and WC pramps internal converters are for sth) none of CHARACTERISTICS as comprehensive as the Q10 by of this card a real Swiss Army knife of audio, and to dispense entirely with a console or rack 8 preamps. and I spend a lot of small features on supplmentaires as two inputs switchable to HI-Z (guitar / bass) to do without DI ... presets levels recorded for monitoring ... SUPER CARD! book with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 full version ... In my opinion the kind of audio quality 8 in the only other choice is the super MOTU 896 + but it is expensive (example 2000 €, I pay 1150 for Q 10)

It is now over a year since I have, here are my impressions, in retrospect.

Installing the gear is done with a little apprhension to sinter the PCI card and the connectors that come with it. A longer cable would welcome t, but good. Cables with older printers, there is little hack extensions that work.

I'd mug on ebay are two different years for $ 350. I could compare with the presonus, but frankly, it is with cheap plasticky knobs on. Ok, the aardvark is not an ergonomic MODEL either, but it is solid.

Well, i don't know where to start the Q10's 'breakout box' features 8 flexible inputs (4 of them feature phantom power and inserts), 1 MIDI I/O, 8 analog outs (balanced 1/4" jack), 2 monitor outs, S/PDIF I/O, a clock I/O, and a headphone output. on the software side,you get one of the main pro's of the Q10: its software mixer enables you to work completely without a hardware mixer. IMHO this is one of the best pieces of audiogear on the market, with a really high 'bang for your buck'-factor.

UTILIZATION

The Q10's preamps are really transparent and clear, without becoming too overly 'clean'.thanks to the really extreme possibility in gain (up to 75 dB), you always can get a signal that's loud enough... Aardvark is known for its audio clocks, and it shows: never had any jitter problems, and extreme highs and lows sound pretty tight. i like its sound better than that of digi or motu systems in the same price category, it has just that little extra 'character'. i only give the Q10 a 9 for sound, 'cause 10 would be for some real good 2" tape machines...

Installation is a breeze, in 10 mins you're up and running. the driver's really stable, i've been using it for 18 months and some 200 songs now and i never had any crashes on that. one of the great things about the Q10 are the flexible inputs: you can plug XLR as well as 1/4" jacks in all 8 of them. as said above, the first 4 of them feature phantom power and inserts (on the back of the box). inputs 7 and 8 are switchable to D.I.-input, ideal for guitar/bass. the software mixer is really easy to use: looks just like a real one (except there's no eq or aux section, of course). with a 90 dB reach of gain, you can record almost any input source you want. here i found one little flaw, though: gain settings can only altered by 'virtually turning' the really small gain knobs on the softwaremixer, it is not possible to enter a gain level by typing it. but hey, it works just fine. monitoring is a breeze, too: you can even pan input signals in the monitormix. routing the outputs is simple thanks to the panel designed for it: it shows a photo of the outputs on the box, with a drop-down menu next to each one, where you can choose whatever you want to be routed through that output. you can also save "snapshots" of the entire interface, so you can easily recall all settings to one previously used. on the 'advanced' panel you can set buffer sizes etc. on my P4 (2 gHz, 1 Mb internal memory), i get a latency of 4 ms out of it, which i am forced to increase when running heavy projects.

OVERALL OPINION

As said above, it's been heavily (ab)used for the last 1,5 year, and it still looks and works like when it came out of the box. the breakout box is really sturdy, and the circuitry itself is shielded on the PCI card. i think it will last a while...

as you could have guessed, it's my baby . it always works, it always sounds good and 'accurate', and you can plug anything in it LOL
