Taika Systems has released at the AppStore a virtual synth based on animal behavior to create various sounds on the iPad.
Taika Systems explains that Photophore is not based on analog circuit modeling but animal behaviors, with flocks that are used as oscillators and move on a tridimensional environment. Their moves are controlled by a special algorithm and physical simulation and though the oscillators are tuned, the app tolerates a certain amount of detuning.
Photophore is designed to generate basses, pads, leads and more.

- Up to 100 oscillators per patch
- Up to 6 voices of polyphony
- Monophonic mode with glide and legato
- 12 waveforms for the oscillators
- High- and low-pass filters with resonance
- Filter and amplitude envelopes
- Stereo echo effect
- Built-in arpeggiator
- Flock behavior touch controls: the way they gather or avoid other flocks, their speed, etc.
- Support for Audiobus, inter-app audio and CoreMIDI
- Ability to control the instrument app from a MIDI keyboard with support for modulation wheel to manage the flocks
Photophore is available for 7.99 €/$ at the AppStore, it requires iOS 7 on iPad 4 and later.
