« low output 7 string pickup »

Published on 09/28/11 at 07:03
The Dimarzio PAF 7 is another pickup where I wonder why they even bothered making it in a 7 string format. Dimarzio is a modern pickup maker known for their cutting edge pickups made for contemporary music. This means they make a lot of 7 string pickups because thats what people are playing nowadays. There are not many people playing non heavy music on 7 strings so these traditional sounding 7 string pickups are pretty strange to me, but I guess they fill a need. There are not many low to medium output 7 string pickups and this is one of them. This pickup is based on the classic PAF from the 50s. It only has 7k of output which will surprise a lot of 7 string players. Even with the vintage sound this pickup still has all the modern features like 4 conductor wiring that lets you split the coils if you so please. This pickup also has a ceramic magnet which is another modern touch. I think if they had put an alnico magnet in this pickup it would have an even more traditional sound. This 7 string pickup is very clean sounding and has a lot if definition from string to string. Because the output on this pickup is pretty low it does not sound harsh at any point in the frequency range. This pickup is very clear even with the low output. You need a lot of clarity when you have an extended range guitar. I usually recommend active pickups for extended range guitars but this pickup works well if you want a lower output sound. The mids are a bit dialed back but everything else is nice and clear without sounding harsh. If you have a 7 string and are looking for a low to medium output pickup for your guitar this is one of the few out there.
