Intense Vocal Effects Right Under Your Foot

With TC Helicon's VoiceTone X1, vocalists can have fun with stompboxes, just like guitarists have been doing all along. VoiceTone X1 gives you tinny megaphones, telephonics, amp effects, and intense vocal distortion, right under your foot (or at your fingertips, with TC's optional MP-75 mic). Although it fits the form factor, the "stompbox" moniker is actually misleading: as a member of TC Helicon's VoiceTone lineup, VoiceTone X1 is strictly studio-grade - complete with a clean, quiet mic preamp and studio-quality A/D conversion. Vocal distortion used to be something you wanted to avoid. Not any more.

TC Helicon VoiceTone X1 Vocal Effect Pedal Features at a Glance:
  • Creates modern-sounding megaphone and distortion effects
  • Filtered telephone sounds also onboard
  • High quality signal path and tough enclosure
  • Can be chained to additional VoiceTone Singles
  • Remote on/off via optional TC-Helicon MP-75 mic
  • Roadworthy die-cast metal case

Clarification to previous reviews.

If you gain up a vocal mic enough to distort, it will cause feedback. Try running this effect to a separate channel that has a lower gain setting and probably a lower monitor feed. This will help with the mix and monitor levels.

You can turn it down but ...

Yeah the pre-set volume is WAY too loud when you engage the pedal. It can be lowered by holding the foot switch down while turning the drive to the left at the same time. If the drive already is left - turn it all the way right then hold the foot switch down then turn the drive knob left. I got it to the same volume as the mic without the effect engaged. The problem is when you power off it goes back to the default setting (way too loud) and you have to go through it all again every time you power it up. I like the effects and would use it more if it wasn't so much trouble. Solid construction for sure.

The TC-Helicon VoiceTone X1 Squealathon!!!

I wish I had of read these reviews before I bought this pedal!!! Sounded like every thing I wanted. Great through a home studio set up like the review clips display but put it through a p.a. and well it just about blew my head off and sent my whippett running and that was at a cautious volume. What a bummer!!! Should be a straight forward concept-can't wait until someone gets it right for live use.

Feedback City

I think the largest issue is how the volume and noise gate are controlled. The master volume cannot be adjusted easily or on the fly and there is no indicator to remind you of the current volume level. The noise gate is equally annoying as for both you have to hold the on button and use knobs assigned to other functions to adjust the level and then you usually forget where you had it to begin with.

Additionally, plugging any of the voicetone pedals in series disables the individual levels on the other pedals and I actually ruined a video shoot's audio accidentally by not realizing that was causing the other pedals to clip my audio on its way to protools. while the verb and delay get a pass because of the frequency of either no sound guy or sound guys that like to run you dry as the sahara for rock vocals, this pedal gets a big no for scaring the audio techs at every venue I have brought it to with it's very powerful feedback sound.

Seriously, I didn't even consider that an actual awesome megaphone is like 50 dollars but I wish I had.

Good idea, horrible execution

Terrible product

Sounds great when speaking at a talking volume, but when you scream into the mic it jumps way up in volume. No way to control that, it seems. Plugged it in at the beginning of our jam and packed it up immediately after trying to adjust all the different parameters. DO NOT BUY
