Yamaha 01V

The Yamaha 01V is a digital mixing console that can do a lot for you right at your finger tips. Even though its no longer produced and has been replaced with the 01V96i version from Yamaha. There are still some in the used sections at music stores which could be a big break for you because the price will be way cheaper then what it was when it first came out. With 24 channel stereo and 24 bit digital recording you cant go wrong with the o1V. If its not about the money then sure go ahead and get the newer model Yamaha o1V96i and have the newest version.


UTILIZATION

The EQ in the 01v is very good and has worked great for me. You really have full control of the overall sound with the EQ on it. You can really get the best out of your music on the Yamaha o1V just from the EQ options alone. All of the eq seems to be distortion free as well.



SOUNDS

Sounds are great, effects are strong and don’t get distorted either. Love using this unit for a live setting. It provides me with all the tools that I need no matter what situation I am in. Im thankful that I got this at a good price and actually found this model. But the newer one Is so much more expensive that this one is.


OVERALL OPINION

Overall, great mixing console all I can really say is beware because after using for a while it seems to get really warm and I don’t think it has any type of built in fan at least from what I can tell so I keep a fan on it if its going to be on for a long period of time. Cant afford for anything to get fried. So you will have to make sure it doesn’t over heat on you, it may never over heat but that’s a risk im not willing to take with a piece of gear that I use often.

I paid about $1600 for this unit at a local Guitar Center store. I needed to move my home studio to more tracks and get something I could also use for live gigs.

I was very happy with the 01V until I outgrew it's track capacity and had to move up to an 02R. I still like some things about the 01V better. The effects are better sounding than my more recently acquired and much more expensive 02Rv2. The fader automation is handy for switching between projects. I had no trouble adapting to the control surface. There is about the right balance of individual channel controls vs. shared controls that act on the currently selected channel.

The 01V T-DIF cards for connecting to Tascam digital tape units (DA-38's in my case) don't handle word clock sync and the separate word clock output doesn't help any. I ended up going ADAT connectors to my MOTU and TDIF from there to the DA-38's. It was a bit hard to find a case for but I did find a semi-rigid well padded case (nightmarish ordering process - I don't recommend ordering custom cases or anything else that isn't in stock in store from Guitar Center).

Yamaha has timing down much better on the ADAT interfaces.Very solid. My initial concerns about taking it on the road to small gigs have been resolved as it is standing up very well.

Well I'd been out of mainstream audio for about 15 years. Compared to what $1600 got you when I was last active to what I got for my money with this purchase I was amazed! And it hasn't stopped there. The new AW-4416 is what I think the Roland VS-880 family should've been.If you're sure that 16 channels is enough for a while buy this unit or look at the 4416. I liked the unit so much that I almost bought a second one and chained them together when I needed to expand.

The Yamaha 01V comes with a rack able option and is very easy to set up. You wont even need to open up the manual to get going, its all self explanatory if you know how to operate most other gear. You can use it with midi which is good because most all equipment now a days is tied to midi. The knobs seem to be pretty strong and well built. Not too sure how it will hold up over the next few years because most machines tend to have issues with the sliders and knobs as time progresses.


UTILIZATION

Everything is easy to use, no manual needed! But if you need the manual hopefully you can find one or one comes with it, because this item is no longer made.

SOUNDS

Sounds great, even though its been out for a while. You can still pick one of these up at a lot of different places online. People are selling these off to upgrade, but with this unit you wont need to upgrade if you know what your doing. It can do everything any other higher priced mixer does. It will be interesting to see how well this holds up for me though, even as old as it is, I still want to see if it can take the wear and tare of how we use our equipment here.


OVERALL OPINION

Overall you cant go wrong with a high quality mixer for less than 300 dollars in todays music world. Most mixers of this caliber are upwards of at least a grand. But because this is an older model you can get it for a lot cheaper that. Even when it first came out years ago it was only around 600 dollars or so here in the US. You can get a used one today, because they don’t produce this model anymore so you will have to search eBay or other sites that sell equipment. Maybe even check down at your local pawn shops as there might be some gear there similar to this one.
