Versatile Features in a Small Package
Published on 05/10/15 at 03:25Delay is quite possibly the most universal effect for guitarists used in different forms across all genres. When it came time to build my pedalboard I knew I had to have a delay pedal on there. I had become accustom to having multiple types of delays from my multi-effects devices I had owned. I knew I wanted to have plenty of options, but I wanted to keep it simple and small. The Flashback Delay by TC Electronic embodied everything I was looking for. The mini version was not available when I bought my delay, but I would not have gone for it since it was limited in its application. The X4 version was too large for my board, but it was tempting.
Line 6 offers some very nice delays that sound fantastic, but I don’t trust the build quality of the housings and switches of their effects. I didn’t want to buy the DL4, then spend the money to get it modified with better switches. Strymon builds very nice pedals, but the Brigadier and El Capistan were not the type of delays I was looking for and the Timeline seemed like over kill. The Timeline I believe works best in a rig that has midi control, and that was not the type of board I was building at the time.
The Flashback was the right size with the right type of delays. There is a wide range of delay types that are available in this small pedal, and they all sound very good. I use the mod, analog, slapback, and TonePrint, throughout my bands set. The TonePrint feature is an amazing addition that expands the capabilities of the pedal. There are four knobs to control- delay, feedback, FX level, and type. There is also a mini-switch that allows choosing between quarter note, dotted quarter note, and a combination of both, for use as the repeats of the delay.
It does not have a tap tempo in the traditional sense, instead it has audio tapping. It works by turning on the pedal and holding down the footswitch for about two seconds until the LED turns off. Strum the quarter notes, then release the switch and you are in tempo. A brilliant answer to keeping the pedal small and still having tap tempo. The looper function is good, but without the extra switches of the X2 I find I only use the looper at home and not at gigs.
There is a slight hum to the pedal, I believe this has to do with the fact I have it on buffered bypass. There is a dip switch on the inside of the pedal that allows you to switch between true and buffered bypass. It is the last pedal in my chain, and it is a good idea to have that pedal be buffered. I also like that the delays continue after I hit the footswitch to turn the pedal off, which sounds so much more natural than the hard stop of true bypass.
The TonePrints are so well crafted that I would prefer to have more slots for them on the type selector knob. Just like my Hall of Fame pedal, the Flashback eats batteries as a snack. I believe the processing power of the pedal, and all its capabilities is the reason for how fast it goes through batteries. I am not complaining about it, because I love what the pedal can do, it just is a fact of its operation that you need to plug it in.
The Flashback is a great and versatile pedal. A very good addition to any pedalboard with its small size. If you only use one type of delay, then the mini version may be the one you choose. If your delay use is more extensive, and you use a looper, then check out the X4. For my purposes the standard model works best with plenty of flexibility, and only requires a little bit of on-the-fly knob turning to keep up with my needs at a gig.See less00 - Thierry255

You can leave all your knobs at noon and choose any delay type and it will work and sound great. Not much tweaking needed unless you are going for a specific delay type.
SOUND QUALITY
I use the analog and tape delay. It is the best tape delay I've ever heard. I run this pedal through my FX Loop and it just sounds awesome. THe crisp and clear delays sound amazing through my overdriven amp. The analog delay mixes well with my overdrives and really as a very smooth feel to it. I have recored with this pedal and it comes through a Shure SM57 perfectly. Sounds Great!
OVERALL OPINION
I love how easy this pedal is to use. I am able to get much better delays out of this pedal than I have before. Usually I struggle with getting good delay sounds with other pedals but this one it is just easy to do without and headaches. I think the price of this pedal is awesome for what you are getting. TC always makes great quality products and it holds true with this pedal. I plan to get more TC electronic pedals in the future!See less00 - duguy182
So many delays in a pedal
Published on 02/04/12 at 00:33 (This content has been automatically translated from French)We are dealing here with a delay pedal very complete with lots of different delay, I invite you to read the manual for the beast that explains it all well.

SOUND QUALITY
The sound is great. I personally preferred the analog delay for its quality of sound and its repetition but all other delay can be exploited to give free rein to your imagination.
The tone print artists are really great, I, for once, chose to print a tone Syu is an analog delay with more gain and less discoloration of sound in rehearsals.
OVERALL OPINION
Ultimately, tc electronic off a major coup with this pedal as with its full range tone print. Find sounds racks tc pedal format at an affordable price with all options I say yes.
Far ahead of the boss and other mxr, this choice I would do without hesitation.See less60 - manyaxx

UTILIZATION
This pedal is very deep, but is easy to jump right into. It can take a while to find "your tone", but I assure you, if delay is a part of that tone, it is in this box somewhere.
The special features of this box make it magical. 6 seconds of delay is more than nearly anyone needs. Stereo ins and outs are very handy. "Audio Tapping" is not quite as easy to use as a Tap Tempo function, but it works just the same! The looper is by far the best looper in this price class, with up to 40 seconds time available.
The TonePrint USB function is great in that one can download patches directly from TC and put them on the pedal. Most of the patches are designed by famous artists!
And the fact that the pedal can be switched from True Bypass to Buffered signal is invaluable!
SOUND QUALITY
I honestly don't think there is a better digital delay pedal out there. It is very convincing on the analog tones, although I can hear a bit of difference, and the digital tones are spot on. The ducking delay sound is really nice, as is the tape-delay - very lush sounds abound in this unit. This pedal sounds great directly into the amp, or in the effects loop.
OVERALL OPINION
I love how feature-packed this box is, but how intuitive it is as well. The sounds are spot on for a digital unit. The buffer/true bypass switch is the best pedal innovation of all time.
My one wish for this pedal is that a delay could run with the looper. Maybe if there was a TonePrint model that had a looper with 38 seconds and a couple of seconds of delay available - that would be a nice feature. I'll rate it a 9 because I wish for that feature, but it should be a 9.9, really!See less00 - Reiep

SOUND QUALITY
Not being a big fan of time, I was amazed! The effects are all good, no throwing. I have a preference for the 2290 mode, the analog delay and lofi.
With little feedback and a short time, the mode mod creates a nice little extra chorus.
RAS on the looper, except the volume control listed above.
TonePrint function seems a little gadget, but a bunch appeared and some really pretty. Following a discussion I had with the product manager TC on another forum, they created a TonePrint TriChorus which is based on the way mod, but with the modulation settings instead of delay and feedback. It was a really good chorus.
In short, this little pedal is a Swiss Army knife of sound.
I tested the two methods of bypass, true bypass or buffered, I did not hear any difference, the buffer seems really good.
Rating: 10. Yes, it's a lot, but there are only good in it, or even very good.
OVERALL OPINION
I originally bought the Flashback to the looper and the possibility of making an extra chorus, and possibly a small delay at times. In the end, allowed me to love Flashback time, a task that even Axe FX has failed to do.
Final score: 9.See less60 - choryphe

UTILIZATION
Simple configuration and especially well thought out. After trying a vintage Artec delay (a little soft and not with Killdry mix thoroughly) and a Memory EH toy (very successful, but I told myself that I would get bored quickly because only one type of delay, but it's my fault I should have guessed), I was about to buy the Nova repeater when I saw the commercial site on our famous Flashback. I initially found it beautiful and more compact but I told myself it would surely not all the features of Nova. Well if my little lady! from the number of subdivisions (black, dotted eighth, etc.) and tone knobs and mod that have disappeared, she does the same (even tapdelay is here!) and even more since Looper 40 seconds (yes sir), 9 types of delays against 6 for the nova. Finally the mode Toneprint "which is a little marketing is not so bad: For the scene, for example, if you need a delay for a specific song, find an approaching what you want among the presets created by our friends the "stars" and set it aside stored in the beast. You can then recall this preset just turning the dial to the position Toneprint practice ...
Manuel succinct but clear
SOUND QUALITY
It's TC, the branch and immediately understand that he made the right choice. Ie no difference or change in volume compared to its bypass with a very clean and audible delay behind ... All the delays are excellent (some may be less useful as lofi) and it's always clean. I mainly use the 2290 (based on the legendary TC 2290), analog (similar to the EH Memory toy) and Tape (very warm). The dynamic is also nice: When you play, the level of delay is mitigated, and between sentences, his level increases.
I use the flashback in the effects loop of my ENGL Screamer 50 (1st model 1997) and it works really well: no "dephasing", the natural sound of the amp is really respected (not even need to use mode Killdry the pedal!).
I also tried recording. Plugged directly into my stereo sound card, at the end of the chain after a few pedals (one 9000volts yerasov, notice provisions) and a johnson j-station as a simulated HP. Great result, the stereo offers a lot and I even made a pretty cool discovery: Normally the only effect is the stereo Flashback Pingpong (normal what), but PUTTING THE SWITCH ON SUBDIVISION BLACK + dotted eighth position (down) ALL BECOME THE DELAY STEREO WITH THE BLACK AND THE LEFT dotted eighth RIGHT IN THE MIX! Class, bravo mr TC!
Otherwise the Looper is nice (you can register as many layers as you wish), I have not bought it but it's fun and interesting to work riffs and improvisations.
OVERALL OPINION
The pros:
- Ben ... everything. The sound quality TC is there (as usual).
- The number of grouping available in a small box (in the 12th century, engineers would have eventually TC at the stake!). Using guitar of course but why not mix console with stereo inputs.
- Small handy features (tap delay, Killdry, looper, toneprint ...)
The -:
- Slayer of batteries! Duracell new one sketched in 1 hour! (Pedal has also worked with the battery not included so be careful before returning the pedal VAS). Provide a brief power supply (works very well with a universal power supply super U!)
Conclusion: The design super efficient.
145 euros is not cheap, but the flashback is a little pedal ideal which we could have dreamed and is more of TC ... or of 5 stars.
