Published on 03/27/11 at 15:38The DiMarzio Evolution 7 is not exactly the same as the original Evolution 6 string model. It’s more like a mix between the original and the Evo 2. It features adjustable allen head bolts on both coils, four conductor wiring and a ceramic magnet.
The Evolution 7 is not nearly as bright and piercing as the original Evolution is. It has more complexity going on, similar to the Evo 2. However, it’s still very tight. Harmonics on this thing are awesome, and the midrange is very badass. The low end on this is much tighter than most of the other DiMarzio line seven string pickups, so it’s great for heavy metal. The treble on this is bright without getting overbearing, bearing similarities to the Evo 2 I mentioned earlier. Split coil tones are pretty good, and parallel tones aren’t bad either. There’s apparently some “Virtual Vintage” technology going on, but I’m not sure exactly how that changes anything.
The output on this thing is pretty strong, so it’s mostly meant for hard rock and heavy metal playing. It’s extremely focused and tight sounding, so it really shows any mistakes that you might make without it being too piercing like the old school Evolution was. The best thing about this is that it’s not muddy. It remains clear under high gain, so staccato notes are always precise sounding.
The pickup works great in just about any wood you can think of. I’ve tried it in basswood and mahogany with great results. If you’re looking for that tight, focused sound that really makes things stand out, this is the pickup you want. If you want a bigger sound, you’ll probably want to try out the Blaze Custom instead. Another cool pickup worth trying out is the new Crunch Lab 7 which is cool as well.
