4. amps in one!

Randall RM 4Published on 06/12/12 at 13:52
This is a randall rm 4 tube preamp.the rm4 for a comes with 3 tubes. An input tube, a phase inverter tube, and in effects loop buffer tube,Then it holds 3 modules each with two preamp tubes. There are 20 + modules available right now. On top of that, there is a major aftermarket of modded modules.

Since its houses four modules, you can choose any amps you want. You can choose the sl+ mod For your marshall tones, the tread plate for your mesa tones, the black face for your fender ones and Still have 1 slot left over for whatever you choose. Most stock modules are great and then the modded modules sound even more accurate and amazing. Each module simply slides in n out of any of the 4...…

They are interchangeable in canby hotswap without issue.

I like to use singles for the fender modules such as the blackface, the deluxe and tweed. I like to use humbuckers for the marshall modulus sl plus,Plexi, and jtm. The marshall tones I think of the best in the series.Well the mesa tones are good they are not great Until you get into the modded market. After that everything is golden A.s the modded modules are absolutely stunning.
You can check out my did nigel at salvationmods.com or, my fave, jadedfaithmods.com

I have never been happier with an amp system. Its going on 2 years that I've been using it and there's been no looking back.
The price is fair considering the value of the product.
You can get them used for about 350 to 400 dollars
Egnater amplifiers also makes dual channel modules.
This system can grow and expand right there with you.

Randall RM4 Preamp

$1100.00 per unit (including 4 modules of choice)

What I love most about the RM4 is two-fold: (1) tonal quality and (2) flexibility.

This 4 channel, all tube modular preamp allows for seamless access to a varity of sounds and tones (either through the on-board channel button or via MIDI switching). The modules are dynamic and VERY responsive to variances in picking. The tone controls REALLY work, providing a variety of tones even with subtle EQ/gain adjustments.

The two effects loops (one parallel w/mix knob, and one series) is a really great feature...allowing precise mixing of effected tone with the raw, unaltered sound.

The two effects loops (one parallel w/mix knob, and one series) is a really great feature...allowing precise mixing of effected tone with the raw, unaltered sound.

The preamp modules themselves are very good. Now, I will say that their ability to "model" the original tones for which the modules are named after varies somewhat (e.g., the Vox Top Boost module is dead on! But the Marshall Plexi module...while good...isn't quite exactly like an original). However, that is not to say that ALL of the modules don't have a great tube sound to them, because they do!!

I currently have (10) of the (12) available modules. I use (8) of them in a dual RM4 rack configuration. Pumped through a VHT 2502, they allow me a world of tones and flexibility!

I'm primarily using Ibanez JEM guitars with my RM4s, but have also tested the units/modules with a few different Gibsons, and a Strat. The modules were all eager to respond dynamically to whatever instrument was sending it signal (unlike, say, a Line6 digital modeling amp, which basically compresses the dynamics so much, it really does capture instrument subtlties very well).

In closing, this unit sounds great, is built very well and is very road worthy. Hell, I used to lug around a rack of (4) amp heads ... now I just have my (2) RM4s and I'm golden for any gig or session!

The thumbscrews that hold the modules in place are a little on the flimsy side. That is, if you're not careful when you extract a module from the RM4 (which is recommended method -- i.e., that you pull on the thumbscrews), the screws can get bent VERY easily! Caution needs to be taken here, or otherwise you'll be left with very bent (and unusable) thumbscrews!

Very well made. Very solid. Other than the aforementioned thumbscrew issue, I have no beefs with these unit(s).

The RM4 really is a great preamp - the sounds are lightyears above the digital modeling amps, from additionally rivals other high-end tube preamps out there (VHT, Soldano, Bogner, etc.).

My only "wish" is that Egnater/Randall continue to pump out new modules for the RM4. I'd like to see a "Bogner" and a
"Soldano" module...but that's just me being greedy (and not wanting to lug around the rack-from-hell!).

For specifications, see the other view.
I would add the connectors back:
- 1 entry (handy for not to piss off the jack to plug ahead!)
- 1 output "pre-loop"
- An effects loop in series and a parallel
- 2 outputs "post-loop"

With all that, I am bursting to connect the stereo on my RM4 2:90 and my cabinet and it can get really nice configs!

The handling is very simple ... We put the module, screw, you put the master volume, we chose the channel, and Roll!
The setting of the modules is also very simple (perhaps even a bit too ...), and sometimes we get a very fast its extra ordinary!

I was already a fan of Randall before I crack of RM4, and it is up to my expectations ... I took a while to get used to it, but there .... This is madness!
I replace the lamp module by Recto Tung Sol a little bit more powerful and cleaner, and a j'obtient grooooooooooos's terrible!
Very typical Mesa (logique. ..), but less dirty ... And that's what I was looking for!
With the VHT in the ass that sends an incredibly powerful with surgical precision, I sound I was looking for a while ...
I play with my Schecter C7 rise in EMG 81-7/707 and RR Ran with my rise in EMG 81/85, and here comes the only criticism I can make it:
I really feel that we can not put any mic (on the Recto module mainly) in the mouth of this monster ...
Indeed, I have on my GFS Lag, and the bridge pickup to be too "powerful" and it makes me sound a little too rough, compared with EMG ...
But on the XTC module is a true massacre!

I use this rack for about ... uh ... 7 months, and I must say that it is folly!
Even if we pay the price (not excessive, but it hurts where it goes anyway ...), the quality is there!
It offers incredible versatility and flexibility! If the need arises, you can even change the module in full concert without anyone noticing ... ^ ^
It is this detail here (besides the fact that it's a Randall ... ^ ^) that attracted me to this preamp.
I had a Laney VH100R before (not at all the same style so ...) and I tried a nice little bunch of other amps before (ENGL, Marshall, Mesa, Randall, VHT ...) and VHT, it is the best amp for me ...
This is THE big sound I was looking for, and versatility perfect, clean between the Recto who buggers to death, tweed that allows me to give a bit of subtlety, and XTC for accuracy and distortion "to 'English'.
If the need arise (I know not how ... o_O), I choose the referrer!
(But maybe not right away, we will let the bank account a rest ...)
