1 Ideal placement for drum overheads?
Hey all,

My band is gonna be at the studio soon and we're not experts on ideal placement. We're also not going to have the assistance of an experienced sound engineer, it's pretty much just to use their equipment.

We're a hard rock band with emphasis on guitar and double bass drum parts, and crash galore...lots of loud sound and high frequency parts.

We will only have 8 inputs available, sufficient to use 2 overheads in order to capture hats, 2 crashes, a ride and a china, while individually miking the kick snare and 4 toms.

We will have a presonus firepod go into a dell (don't laugh) laptop running cubase sx3 outputting through a pair of Mackie monitors and sub. No outboard effects.

In short, I need help knowing where to place the 2 overhead mics, as I've heard that can make or break the entire tone

Assuming they're going to be over the kit, spaced apart and angled in a little, I would recommend a lot of experimentation with height, angle, and how far forward or back you place them. Spend some time testing out different OH configurations until you find the one that works best for your music and the acoustics of the room.

I just tried this out (i think i did, it sounded a little confusing). To be honest, I like the balance between the toms, and considering I'm only using 2 OHs, the recording sounds almost like it does while I'm playing in my rehearsal space. Thanks for the tip!
