    A Great Machine!

    Akai Professional S950Published on 03/15/13 at 11:27

8-voice polyphony, jacks connectors 6.35, recording front with red knob level. Great ergonomics optional card up to 2 MB (no kidding!) Inaccessible as expensive at the time of the franc ... 8 individual outputs an output + L / R.

    UTILIZATION

I've never had the manual and no internet at the time so system D.
Sampling on this machine has always amazed me: This is supposed to be the 12-bit and yet a great precision in the samples.
Automatic search of the ideal point of closure. - And trigger the attack of the sound.
Time-stretching was well rotted yet ... Number of tubes in the 90's were done with this so typical (CJ Bolland, Armand Van Helden, Massive Attack to name a few)

    SOUNDS

See above: Sharpness and presence in the mix. Note envelopes additive and subtractive filters very very good.

    OVERALL OPINION

I long ago ... It is good place in my rack expanders. I understand that some people are looking for the S-950 for its "grain". I have identified three fundamental qualities:
    Ease of use.
Possibility of producing sounds completely crazy from scratch.
Separate outputs + big dynamic in terms of volume.
5 number one club with him. Truly a great machine!

on the other hand for tablecloths and violins, I use a sampler with over DEFINITIONS because the S950 is trs trs lo-fi short, when we want clarity and many DEFINITIONS, better use another sampler of such instruments!

    SOUNDS

I have an MPC60 dsormais I wanted for the sequencer, unless my ears betray me, but the sound is eerily similar adpend what we seek, I used to supplement the ment of another sampler because it did not do everything, it's a good sampler for plutt batteries, PCHE and loops a little lo-fi, for cons for orchestral instruments It is inefficient lol

    OVERALL OPINION

It's a sampler possder absolutely nothing for grain and its undeniable effectiveness of some samples!
for fans of sound banks and other cd-rom flee. . .

C is an old school sampler, so very limited polyphony and memory (... but n is not the issue with this type of sampler). Similarly no effects and c is of 12 bits.

... Big names of hip-hop dj first kind to those in the dance genre fatboyslim, no error .. smashes it serious. (the kind of machine that will be worth 10 times its current price in 10 years when it's become untraceable .....)

    OVERALL OPINION

J uses this machine for over three years, also has an e-mu SP12 turbo, 440 is a studio
quential circuit (something crazy !!!), and MPC3000 and can assure you that this machine serious slap!
it will not make a lot of things but put it a foot, a snare and a sample and it may well be that you start saving to buy another ................ .............

Not exactly a full featured sampler but it does make a wicked drum module.

    Price paid

    $200.00

    UTILIZATION

Super easy to use. I'm a newbie and I downloaded the manual from akai and mastered the thing shorty after.

Very big and heavy. Seems to be built very solid.

    SOUNDS

Best part about this puppy. Old school grit and raw. 12 bit!

    OVERALL OPINION

Might give it up for the right price but probably not. Love it.

The features were a 10 when it was released, but with computer's in the market. The features don't hold up for these days.

    Price paid

    $250

    UTILIZATION

    Simple, real simple.

This thing is a tank. I'm afraid to drop it, not in fear of breaking it. But in fear of damaging my floor or my foot.

    SOUNDS

12-bit sound sounds great. I run almost all my samples through this machine to my computer.

    OVERALL OPINION

I love this thing. Nothing beats the sound from this thing.

As only alone sampler it wouldn't suit with todays needs. It does have a timestrech feature (the S900 does not). The memory is limited to a max of 2.25Mb that includes the expensive memory-upgrade, but as a drumsampler the original amount is definitely sufficient. polyphony is very limited, but thanks to it's 8 outputs you can manage to route each drumsound to a different output.

    UTILIZATION

It's very intuitive and simple to use, even without reading the manual, even though i would definitely recommend using the manual.

It's very heavy and strong built.

I use it as a drum module only. Its 12-bit sound makes the drums dirty and that's exactly what i wanted.

Honestly, I never use anything other than one-shot samples, tuning, and the occasional time-stretch, and this has all of them. Supporting modern-day 1.44 MB diskettes is nice too.

    Price paid: $259.99 USD

    UTILIZATION

Very easy to use, once you get the hang of the menus. I really enjoy editing samples on it with the knob. It is also very flexible as you can lay out every sound you need in a song on one MIDI program, and assign different sounds to different outputs on the back of the unit. So you can technically play every part of your song on one keyboard, while still using multiple outs.

    SOUNDS

Its actually quite transparent sounding. Like the SP-12, I find a lot of its charm comes from sampling in fast and tuning the samples down (for drums, anyway). It has a VERY different sound than the SP-12 though. I use it for all my drum loops, or anything that I want to be a bit lo-fi and is too long to sample into my SP-12.

    OVERALL OPINION

Built like a tank. When I first got mine, it needed some connections resoldered but it was nothing major. New equipment isn't built this solidly.

I'll never get rid of it, and if it broke, I would buy a new one. It, like the SP-12, has a special place in my studio, alongside my computer running Cubase and HALion as a software sampler.
