A small box, with a great sound

Daking Mic Pre OnePublished on 11/30/12 at 04:52
The Daking Mic Pre One is one of the simplest preamps that you will ever see. It is easy to understand and use no matter how seasoned you are working with preamps and it is also at a very competitive price. This solid state preamp has 1 channel and phantom power. You will only get 1 XLR microphone input and 1 ¼ input; 1 XLR output and 1 ¼ output on the Pre One. This preamp is more of an odd shape, it looks like a little toy box and cannot be racked. So it will take up some desk space even though it is only about 5 inches wide at the most.

UTILIZATION

There are no digital inputs or outputs on this preamp and no compression or EQ but it does have switchable 48 volt phantom power with a 20dB pad microphone input. The knobs on the front of the Pre One are made from Aluminum and will last you a long time.

SOUND QUALITY

This microphone preamp is not pretty to look at, but it will get the job done and most importantly we could afford it. The layout of the Daking Mic Pre One is one of the simplest layouts you will see on a preamp. Everything is right on the front of it you only have in instrument input and two knobs. You will have your input, phase, pad, phantom power switches and that is it.

OVERALL OPINION

This Class A preamp is perfect for the stage and studio, it is easy to transport and is made out of steel casting/housing. It will last you a long time. The preamp itself is very quiet; I have not notices any noise coming from it. The Mic Pre One gives you some quality stuff to work with that I didn’t expect to get with it. We mainly use this with an electric guitar and sometimes a keyboard. No matter what we use it for it works great and best of all it gives us a great sound. I highly recommend this small box (Daking Mic Pre One).

Daking Mic Pre OnePublished on 02/13/10 at 19:35
The Daking Mic Pre One is a single channel mic preamplifier and direct input box made up of all class A parts. The mic pre has all of the works that you would want from a preamp, although you don't often find them all in one place. The pre has a -20db pad, phantom power, phase reverse, mic/line selection, as well as a high pass filter with fixed frequencies from 10 Hz to 200 Hz. It has a large gain knob to set the mic input level. As far as connections goes, it has both inputs and outputs in the form of XLR and 1/4" jacks. It also has a six pin transformer connection. It isn't rack mountable as it sits in a box.

UTILIZATION

If you understand the feature that come along with microphone preamplifiers, the Daking Mic Pre One won't present you with any problems. Even if you are a beginner, I still think that you'll be able to use the Mic Pre One without any major issues. The manual might be a good thing to have around if you're new to things like this, but is certainly not necessary.

SOUND QUALITY

I've really got no complaints about the way the Daking Mic Pre One sounds. I've used it for a number of applications including use with both dynamic and condenser microphones. I've used it to record acoustic and electric guitar, as well as bass guitar and keyboards with using it as a DI box. The mic pre has an extremely clean sound that will reproduce the signal that you send to it accurately without a doubt. It is the type of mic pre that won't add anything to the sound on its own, but will faithfully get the job done, which is generally what I look for in a mic pre.

OVERALL OPINION

For a single channel preamplifier, the Daking Mic Pre One is an overall great choice. You've got a ton of options to work with, with the high pass filter being versatile and perhaps its best feature beyond just the sheer sound quality. The mic pre is definitely priced right considering how well built it is and that it is made up of class A parts. It comes in a portable box, so this would be a great choice to be both a main stay in a studio or for the traveling studio owner looking for a great sounding mic pre to go beyond what their interface has to offer...

Preamp Daking transistor manufactured by the USA.
In the rear XLR or 1 / 4''in front. Out XLR or 1 / 4''.

Preamp with all the vital functions (gain,-20db, 48v phantom power, phase ...) which also features a High Pass filter (0-200Hz) rather surprising.

Model for non-rackmount format DI: The preamp has the shape of a brick ...

Price: 500-550 euro (You like me, you do pay by the Belgian distributor for a while ...)

UTILIZATION

Ultra simple to use: plug, adjust the gain (and the HPF if necessary) and go.

Not need the manual to use a preamp ...

UTILIZATION

Ultra simple to use: plug, adjust the gain (and the HPF if necessary) and go.

SOUND QUALITY

The sound of my microphone has nothing to do. While round and punchy wish. The spectrum is perfectly reproduced, but we feel a stronger presence in the Low and Medium. The treble remains clear and detailed.
Afterwards, I just do not really say that this preamp is transparent. It has a certain color (the manufacturer, Geoffrey Daking, says they were inspired by the famous Trident A-Range console). I've never tested this Trident, but all I know is that the Daking sounded incredibly good. Upscale.

OVERALL OPINION

I use it for a few days. He is in intensive testing.

I have used or tested the M-audio, Presonus, the Art ... I would say that we should not spit on these products because they represent a good beginning. They are worth what they are worth, however, some excellent value for money (sometimes superior to more expensive brands).

That said, in terms of sound quality, it's almost day and night! I rediscovered my microphones.

I hesitated with a Great River channel and Rupert Neve P1. The price made me take the Daking directly, since only the color noise (and some features) changes. The sound quality, construction and assembly is level.

The value for money is very good. It is a device that you keep a lifetime. If you buy another preamp is to have another sound color, not for better.
