Andy Timmons is a pretty famous Ibanez user, so it was only natural for him to get his own signature model. This particular one is a bit different from the 100 and the 300. The guitar is based on the SA body, and it has a mahogany body, maple neck with a rosewood fretboard, 22 jumbo frets, dot inlays, Ibanez vintage style tremolo, HSS configuration with Ibanez pickups, HSS configuration with two volumes, one tone and a five way switch.

UTILIZATION

The guitar is put together nicely. The frets were top notch. There were no issues when it came to crowning issues, and the edges were beveled nicely so they wouldn't cut your hand. The nut was cut decently and the strings would glide in them. However, it was a touch deep. This could be because of normal wear throughout the years or somebody messing with it. However, I'd like to see the slots a little higher for ultimate tremolo stability. The tremolo itself isn't too bad, but I like the Wilkinson on the AT300 better. That's more of a personal opinion than anything else as the bridge is still fairly solid. The neck joint on this is the AANJ, and it's super easy to get to the higher frets on this thing. It wasn't an overly heavy piece of mahogany, so there were no issues with weight.

SOUNDS

The guitar sounds decent, and the reason it only sounds decent is thanks to the Ibanez pickups that were installed. Unlike the AT300, this has some standard, run of the mill Ibanez pickups in it. They sound kinda bland and don't have the character I love from DiMarzio pickups. The guitar itself was nice and resonant, so no issues in that aspect. The bridge is thick sounding, but it's not the clearest out there. The neck and middle have that kind of P90-ish tone going on, but the AT300's pickups excel at that much more.

OVERALL OPINION

If you're looking for an alternative to the AT300, this is worth checking out. However, they can be very hard to find given that they were only made for a few years and their destination was more geared towards Europe and Japan. If you do decide to get one of these, replace the pickups. Once you do, it'll bring new life into this guitar that it didn't have before.
