DiMarzio DP110 FS-1

Dimarzio is known for their modern sounding pickups. Most of the great modern guitar players use them nowadays. Steve Vai and Satriani and Petrucci all swear by them. They are always advancing their designs and coming out with updated versions of their pickups. They also have a few more traditional designs. When you get a Dimarzio single coil the odds are that it isnt really a single coil. Most of their single coil sized pickups are just small humbuckers. This is one of their first true single coil designs. The Fs-1 features 2 conductor wiring and an alnico 5 magnet. The output is a little over 14k. The Fs-1 is pretty outdated nowadays but some people still swear by its traditional sounds. Even in the mid 70s they were trying to get more modern sounds. This is an early attempt to have a smoother sounding single coil sound. This pickup is for the guy who thinks most single coil pickups are too bright. This pickup has a lot of output for a single coil but the sound is smoothed out a lot so it doesnt sound as harsh. Even with the smoother tone the pickup still have decent single coil bite. It doesnt sound completely like a humbucker. It has good bite and punch. This is primarily a bridge strat pickup. It does a high gain tone very well which is something most single coils cant do. The pickup also cleans up pretty well for being so hot and a bridge pickup. Many people used this single coil back in the day for their hot rodded metal strats. Nowadays people are leaning towards Dimarzios Area line of pickups for their single coil needs. Dimarzio recommends matching it with a set of True Velvets in your guitar for a balanced tone. If you are looking for an old school shreddy single coil tone this pickup would be a decent period choice.

The DiMarzio FS-1 is a regular single coil (meaning no hum canceling technology) that’s designed to be fatter and more powerful than regular single coils. It features staggered pole pieces, two conductor wiring and an Alnico 5 magnet.

The FS-1 was designed to be a replacement strat pickup for those wanting a fatter, more powerful sound but still retaining a single coil sound. It doesn’t have the old school vintage sound going on but more of an overwound, hotter vibe. The pickup is fairly balanced with a decent treble bite, and it’s not super hot so it works in every position. Paul Gilbert used this pickup for awhile as his middle pickup in his Ibanez guitars.

The pickup does cleans fairly well, but it really shines in the higher gain department. It’s fairly open, cleans up nicely when you roll the volume down and delivers a good overall punch. It’s basically one of those “do all” single coils on the market. It doesn’t matter what wood combination your guitar has. This pickup will most likely mate with it in any situation.

However, therein lies the problem -- I find it to be a bit bland overall. It works in every position and nearly ever wood, and it delivers a good sound. It just doesn’t deliver a great sound like the Area pickups that DiMarzio offers. The Area pickups are newer, so it kinda makes you wonder what relevance the FS-1 has in DiMarzio’s current line up. It’s a 70s pickup, after all.

If you’re looking for a regular single coil sound, I recommend the Area series. They sound more alive, have a better tone and offer more options than the FS-1. However, if you want that famous tone that many shredders had back in the day, the FS-1 could be worth looking into.

Single coil pickup. Aspect strat traditional plot with six tags. This micro possde more than a single standard coil causing the blow more power, a boost in mdiums and a little less sharp than a standard Fender but while keeping the attack and the twang of a single coil. Hence the name Fat Start 1 - Fs1.
Curious that no opinion on the mic and it is not more popular in France. This silent yet mounted in position on the handle strat Knoplfer red (from 79, and an album Communiqu time on the black strat Gilmour (PERIOD Animals and The Wall). If Logan What's so.
For my part I test a lot of strats and in all positions ...
In the neck position you have little prs the sound of a P90 with the smooth and the attack. You can hear the sound of the song "Single Handed Sailor" Marl Knoplfer on Communiqué. Great for blues, jazz or the crunch of Santana.
In this case, we must compensate with a bridge pickup much more powerful kind hotrails. It's good but it is the mind too much vintage Start.
In the bridge position is the micro that takes its place. More pchu, it catches up the weakness of the usual micro lead in the stratum and suddenly, for me, this instrument rquilibre totally fabulous. The mic sounds a bit duller, makes plans style tlcaster or Rory Gallagher and sounds good in crunch and saturax.
In addition, this micro blends well with the central micro, which keeps its strat a quasi intgral intermdiaire position.
For my part, and on all my strats I install a switch allowing me to link parallle in the neck pickup and bridge. This gives little prs the sound of the central position of the Tlcaster. All happy!
Less than 60 euros, I think the report took excellent quality.
