JeffTadashi's review"Can't record drums without it!"

Tascam US-1641
The Tascam US-1641 is a 16 input, 4 output usb midi recording interface. It includes 8 mic inputs with phantom power and 60db of gain, two balanced TRS line/guitar inputs, four more balanced inputs on the back of the unit, digital input and output via S/PDIF, separate monitor output, separate headphone output, and midi in and midi out capabilities. Although this is an older, discontinued product, in some ways I prefer it over the newer version. One reason, is that the US-1641 has a simple power cord connection, whereas the newer recording interface uses a special power adapter (not sure why they made the change).

UTILIZATION

Although this unit is older and discontinued, it works flawlessly on my Windows 7 system. For recording drums and recording live sessions, you cannot beat this unit, for a small home studio. I use it every week to record my band's practice, and even when I use it with my older Windows XP system (that I keep in our practice room), my computer can easy handle all of the inputs at once.

Mainly, this unit is invaluable for recording drums, where more than two inputs (which is what my main audio interface has) in necessary. With the ability to hook up 8 phantom-powered mics directly, plus 6 additional 1/4 line-leve inputs, you have the capacity to record any standard drum set. The gains are fairly easy to set on the device, as there are light indicators to let you know when a channel is receiving input, and when the input is too hot. However, even if the indicator doesn't turn red, I find that sometimes the input still gets a bit clipped and distorted if you are not careful with the volume levels. This happens in particular with large diaphragm condenser microphones, which I find myself turning the gain all the way down to prevent clipping.

GETTING STARTED

Installation is relatively easy, but it always seems necessary to download new drivers from Tascam's website directly. The Tascam US-1641 is fully compatible with 64-bit and 32-bit Windows systems. I have not tried it yet on a Mac OS computer (but usually, it's the Windows systems that tend to lack support, not Mac).

OVERALL OPINION

Overall, this is a great audio and midi interface that any small studio should pick up, certainly if they need to recording drums or live sessions.

Tascam US-1641
The Tascam US 1641 is probably, next to its newer, more attractively shaded successor, the US 1800, the greatest deal when it comes to inputs and outputs for the price in an interface. 16 inputs and 4 outputs for under $300 is quite a steal, and nothing on it screams that it is cheap at all. It is a very solid, very robust looking unit, and it does not slack in the latency department either. I have not even bothered with universal ASIO drivers for these because the 1641 is not terribly inhibitive when it comes to recording and monitoring. It can record in 96 k at a 24 bit depth, which means you get 144 dB of headroom, a lower noise floor, and much less incentive to use compression for sources that just happen to be too dynamic, such as classically trained singers. Being one, that is a huge deal to me.

UTILIZATION

The drivers for this device are a little old and antiquated, but they serve their purpose and have never failed on me. Usually, I found that whatever program I was using was the culprit. The nice thing about this is that just about everything is on the front, and while it lacks monitorning capabilities, lacking meters, and lacking any sort of specific signal indication, this is, remember, a device that is here to just help you record, real fast, for real cheap. The preamps for what you are getting are unreal. Consider the fact that this interface has 10 preamps on it, and while they do seem a little distant and unsaturated, they get the job done cleanly, and can be messed with ITB.

GETTING STARTED

It is set up just like any other interface. Nothing much to say here. There is nothing distinctive about this one.

OVERALL OPINION

I love this interface almost as much as I loved that money I would have spend on something more expensive and higher quality. It is not the greatest machine in the world, but it gets the job done. Well. It is a massive amount of inputs for next to nothing.

Patbaf's review (This content has been automatically translated from French)" Ultra flexible configuration"

Tascam US-1641
The advantage of this machine and why I bought it:
16 inputs, 8 XLR phantom power supply with front panel: ideal for studio or home studio + all the different outputs on the back. Not to mention 8 input jack on the rear two entrees + HZ (bass guitar on the front)
NB: phantom power button on the front

In frontage: one knob to balance the mix and the singer's voice, for example, very afficace;
avoids changing the faders on the console. Excellent headphone directly facade.

Personally, for voice, I preamplified with an Avalon or UNIVERSAL M 610 and joined the US-1641 online.
Otherwise the XLR are nickel with very little breath even with the knob fully.

This is ideal for recorded several singers, a battery, a small group "live" effects hardware back into the DAW ... Everything is just connected to my USB 2. No worries or cracking in Low Latency

You can send output directly to a network and directly through headphone monitors,
More manageable entry at the rear.

In short, in connection with a Presonus Monitor Station, all is super flexible and versatile in the number of person to register (it's been 16 entered a lot of people). I never went all the way into the possibility, but so far no worries. The single USB connection 2 is quite sufficient.

UTILIZATION

No worries drivers to install: plug directly into MAC play year.

GETTING STARTED

Meem not need to read the manual, for which has already done a little recording studio, all inputs and outputs are identified.

OVERALL OPINION

I use it for six months, after trying several digital audio interfaces to input 2: Alesis, M-Audio ...
Ben is the day you at night: no more cracking, staining, undesired compression, the signal is transparent
(It's on with Avalon before)

If need to have more input: well I do it again the same choice, for consistency.
In addition she is beautiful, even if its shiny knob are a bit cheap /

Tascam US-1641
Number of inputs and outputs (16x4), 1U, digital output.
I uilise to record guitar, bass and vocals before passing through an ART preamp DPSII.

Other useful features:
The Mix knob that can be used as a mixer without a PC
A volume knob and a button Monitor Phones independent

UTILIZATION

Right now no crash on win 7 64 bit and Sonar X1D Expanded.
Pb no latency.

GETTING STARTED

Smooth installation.

OVERALL OPINION

Bought used a year ago.

I remake that choice without problem

Tascam US-1641
I wanted to record in multitrack without ruining myself.
Pc Fujisu-Siemens dual core AMD Athlon 64 4000 +, 2 Gigabytes of RAM, Vista and Cubase AI 4. Disk drives in external USB enclosure needed to work seriously.
Also installed in my laptop running XP ultimate this time with Cubase LE 4 that came with the interface.

UTILIZATION

The drivers are quite stable, no worries. I enregsitrement up to 8 channels simultaneously.

GETTING STARTED

Installation is no problem in minutes under either vista or XP. Cubase recognizes it immediately and the config is simple to configure.

OVERALL OPINION

I've had a little over 6 months and I'm very happy, the quality / price is very good. I would do this choice.

Tascam US-1641
Q / P exceptional
IMAC 24 "4 gb ram
Snow Leopard

UTILIZATION

Perfect OS X, an ordeal as .. Windows .. cracking etc, unusable.

In OS X I put him in full of cum, but none so no worries. (I connect everything together is through Jack: Mixbus Harrison + Garage Band + + virtual samplers reaper3 + hydrogen + audacity, no problem)

While I did not even keep it when I was a PC running XP, then I do not even think about anything. I mix I plug it rules.

I love the sound of this card, really impressive for the price. So I became a fan of his TASCAM.

GETTING STARTED

Install super fast as ... snow leopard. Snow specific drivers.

OVERALL OPINION

Q / P Excellent but to reach the top (for me) would have TASCAM looks back on ... firewire ... The same as firewire and it's nirvana. TASCAM has emerged from a 1641 "remastered" I do not see any interest. Much to offer a "1641" in firewire make a difference ...

e-bou01/27/2009

e-bou's review (This content has been automatically translated from French)

Tascam US-1641
- What technical specifications motivated your choice?

Essentially the number of entries. Rptition in the number of recovery is adapted from a battery 2 songs + 2 guitars + bass

- For what purpose?

Two different uses: home studio use for which a quantity of other models would make the same service, and multitrack recording rptitions simultaneous and such use is the only in this price range.

- What is your config (motherboard / CPU / Ram / Hard ,...)?

I work on a mac and it works perfectly. That's why I DPOS opinion. It is a mac laptop of quality bought two years ago, not a box of race, 60 gigabytes hard drive, 1 gigabyte of memory, OS 10.4

- Which instruments or Systmes (console, prampli, DTD ...) you use it and how connections? ...

I only use this sound card connects to the mac, and auxiliary outputs for monitoring. The amps are input online, microphones faade.

UTILIZATION

- Installation is it without problem?

No worries for the pilot, it's pretty hard to Cubase when you do not possde English well, due to obtaining the license online. APRS works well.

- Have you experienced any incompatibility?

No indeed, but it must renounce use this card with Garage Band. It's a shame because it is a simple software trs CASC and fast recording work. Is your exact mesh pops and crackles, and latency is dramatic. These problems are not the product ds because they do not exist with Cubase LE.

- The configuration gnrale is easy?

Everything is set up in cubase, the pilot is a Tascam dpouillement cistercien.Une time input in this soft, does not pose a problem.

- The manual is clear and sufficient? ...

There is a tiny booklet provided in many languages, but more than enough, because the same card in it does not Submitted difficulty of use. The problems facing the opening cubase beginners. It is software that takes time discovering. Paper documentation of Cubase would not be too many.

GETTING STARTED

- The drivers are stable?

For now, I had no problem of stability.

- Are they often put day?

The MODEL is rcent, yet it Yadji of updates possible depending on platforms. To be continued.

- What software do you use most often?

In Music, I used plutt Audacity, Garage Band, Acid. I go for this in Cubase.

- What you get lag?

I use that hardware with Cubase and I record without realizing anything. I ask no more.

- How many tracks you get record / playback simultanment? ...

I have not had the opportunity to attempt to register any time, as the drummer with a battery electronic BPS, but six tracks, all is well.

OVERALL OPINION

- How long have you use it?

Two weeks rcent So, I will then refine my thinking.

- What is the particular feature you like best and least?

The best: the button mix is excellent, playing with the mix and the monitor, I beeps in the song by the latency-free monitoring and carefree. It simplifies the installation (wiring, handling ...). I also like the ten entries in faade. This is important for a card rack. The sound is excellent.

The least: The map srieuse and robust, except potentiomtres are toys. The buttons are tiny plastic trs end, they offer no Resistors rotation, and potentiomtres fixs appear on the rubber so the joining with the card is flexible. When you're used Boss or Mesa Boogie, it seems that the slightest shock can bend or break them. Moreover, as they are quite prominent, it m'apparat almost essential to acquire a rack for being protected, or carry in his bote systmatiquement cardboard, which all do fawn will not last for years. I do not like either the potentiomtres groups on the right, I have them in prfr vis vis the respective inputs. Input XLR / Jack t would also help. But it is a dtail.

- Have you tried many other models before acqurir?

Saffire LE: A good map, but essentially turns to the home studio. MODEL This suited me more.

- How do you report qualitprix?

Say that competition does not exist as a map for 16 tracks in this price range, the question does not arise.

- With the exprience, you do again this choice? ...

Yes, hsiter in the current state of the market. If, against Tascam parallle had an identical card "pro" version, with real potentiomtres solid, well placed, and between handsets Jack / XLR equipped with individual phantom power, I ' prfr would have the choice, even dpenser a little more.

sebg61's review (This content has been automatically translated from French)

Tascam US-1641
- What technical specifications motivated your choice?

the base I needed a sound card for laptop, and then as my mixer was not much I / O, I thought that the tascam is a good way to evolve my System.
- For what purpose?

Primarily for the recording / mastering evening (tekno and / or instruments).
But I also used to compose some tracks the guitar (rift / bass / solo ...)
- What is your config (motherboard / CPU / Ram / Hard ,...)?

Asus laptop processor intel pentium dual cpu T2370 1.73 MHz / 2GB RAM / 250GB HDD

- Which instruments do you use or Systmes the connection and how?

I only use symtriss jack.

1) analog

Between:
Online 11/12: signal from turntable-> table-> limiting
micro: in a
Guitar: in 9

Outputs:
1 / 2: Towards an active filter
3 / 4: 2 to crossover
2) Numrique / Midi

MIDI IN: KORG machines (the red and green)
want all the tracks in cubase (recording, samples ...)
with Fruity Loops in parrallle from time to time (patern, samples, ...)

UTILIZATION

- Installation is it without problem? Have you experienced any incompatibility?
- The configuration gnrale is easy? The manual is clear and sufficient?

Problem-free installation, Manual explicit standard configuration.

GETTING STARTED

- The drivers are stable? - Are they often put day?

the drivers seem stable search of updating regularly.
- What software do you use most often?

SoundForge, FruityLoops, Cubase.
What you get lag?

I do not really know but configured in "lowest latency" and pc: ok

- How many tracks you get record / playback simultanment?

I did try that six tracks read / write: no problem.

OVERALL OPINION

- How long have you use it? How do you report qualitprix?

purchased in September 2008 priced at 350 euro including postage with a dynamic mic available (not top quality but the microphone available ...)
- What is the particular feature you like best and least?

the most: simplicity, good dynamic knew her, the quality Tascam.

Cons:
* The output monitor (master3) can not be commanded via cubase,
* Not be able to route a path to the master simultanment 2 (must be doubled and assign inputs input1-> input1 = input2 master1-> master2)
- With the exprience, you do again this choice? ...

no problem, since I show my circle, they all want one!
