Michael studied Music Education at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music from 1978 to 1981, graduating with a BMus (Ed.). He started his teaching career in 1982, based at Elizabeth College, which specialises in Years 11 and 12. Michael's work as a teacher over the following 21 years spanned from Year Two (Lambert Cottage School) to tertiary level (Composition Tutoring at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music).

Michael began composing in Grade 10, and had several of his earliest works premiered by the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra, under the baton of Gwyn Roberts. In 1978 Richard Mills premiered an excerpt from his suite "Four Tributes to Imperial Classicism" with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra at two concerts designed for schools. While at the Tasmanian Conservatorium, Michael studied composition with Ian Cugley and Don Kay, and in 1985 studied privately with Paul Patterson, Head of Composition and Director of Contemporary Music at the Royal Academy of Music, London.

Michael's score Sun Cycles (for Symphonic Brass and Percussion) was given permanent placement in the Royal Academy Library by Paul and Harold Nash (Director of Brass Studies). Upon returning to Tasmania, Michael and his wife Helen Parry-Jones successfully set up Contempo Music Publications, which sold works by local composers such as Don Kay, and also works by composers as far afield as Wales (UK) and New Zealand.

Michael has received commissions by the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra, Hobart College, Arts Tasmania and the British Arts Council (Berlin). Michael's work is currently focused on the confluence of sampling technology and live performance, with a view to teaching the subtleties of jazz and Afro/Cuban phrasing within Classical Music architecture.

Michael has worked frequently as a casual trombonist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (1980 - 1985), and was a founding member of The Tasmanian Trombone Quartet.
