Excellent value for money

KV331 Audio Synthmaster 2.xPublished on 03/27/14 at 04:32
The purchase is done online on the KV331 web site. Installation was easy enough, especially if it's just for Live as all you have to do is copy the VST in the Live directory.

I installed it on an i7-3770 3.4 GHz with 16 GB of Ram and W8. I use the 64-bit version with Live 9.

I did not need a manual or guide for installation.

SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

Synthmaster's level of quality is configured as "draft" by default. Under these default conditions, the performance is very good with my setup. I can easily run 10 instances of Synthmaster without reaching the limits of CPU. The sound is already correct and impressive. Surprising for a VST bought for € 70 with over 600 sounds.

I can easily run 10 instances of Synthmaster without reaching the limits of CPU. The sound is already correct and impressive. Surprising for a VST bought for € 70 with over 600 sounds.

With the quality setting at its highest, most sounds can still be played through Live without any complications. Performance only starts to take a hit with certain big pad sounds, in which case lowering the quality setting will get the job done without losing quality in sound rendering. But in general, at the maximum quality setting, the sound rendering quality is excellent and the virtual filters react beautifully. It really feels like you have a hardware machine at your fingertips.

OVERALL OPINION

Like the Zebra2, Diva, Omnisphere, etc, the Synthmaster is a real synth that responds well in live applications to external stimuli. The level of sound quality delivered is impressive, especially given the price. Definitely worth the money! It's almost shocking that the Synthmaster is relatively unknown, given the price and the quality.

I highly recommend.

Three Thumbs Up!

KV331 Audio Synthmaster 2.xPublished on 12/10/12 at 10:19
No compatibility issues.
Didn't read the manual.
GUI is clear, could be more inspiring.

SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

Stable. No crashes.
Only using for a few days.

OVERALL OPINION

SynthMaster v2.5 by KV331 Audio is a fantastic all-round, do-it-all, hybrid soft synth, unlike anything else out there! For years I've been bothered by the fact that the big name synth companies leave out a cool feature or two — short changing us users somewhere along the way, forcing us to supplemental gear to make up for deficiencies — to fill in the missing sonic pieces. I have often thought to myself, "If they only included this or that it would be a great synth." Well, I can't think of anything to add to...…

I have often thought to myself, "If they only included this or that it would be a great synth." Well, I can't think of anything to add to this baby! SynthMaster does it all within its semi-modular architecture — Additive, A Mod, F Mod, P Mod, PW Mod, R Mod, Physical Modeling, Wavetable, plus AIFF/WAV and MIDI import, not to mention a lot of cool filters, oscillators, and effects. It has accurately been nicknamed the Swiss Army Knife of soft synths. SynthMaster is complex enough to keep an audio tweaker busy for an eternity and easy enough to keep a novice from throwing his/her laptop out the window in a fit of frustration. The array of features including in this synth is astonishing, but what really stands out is the variety and quality of sound it can produce. It does everything from clean, smooth, and warm to dirty, nasty, and eerie.

There are so many pros — too many to list, but naturally there are some cons. The CPU could be a little more streamlined and the effects could be reduced throughout most of the preset collection. Less is more, especially when working with a sound so organically lovely. Cut back on that FX! Be naked, stand up proudly and declare, "I AM A SOUNDMASTER PRESET AND I SOUND GREAT." Will SynthMaster replace Diva for analog warmth, Predator for aggressive leads, the D-16 line for their niche, or Lounge Lizard for EP? NO! But, will it provide an amazingly powerful core synth that you can call upon to do just about anything? YES! For me, it’s not a desert island synth, but it is a tasty dessert, filled with just about every sweet flavor. And, you know what they say, “Life is short, launch your dessert synth first!”

I highly recommend SynthMaster to any professional electronic musician, sound guru, or producer looking for a deep, solid foundation synth . . . or the amateur looking for one good synth that is packed with all the synthesis types that are ready to learn and explore. When I first heard the name and saw the price I assumed it would be a little synth pretending to be big, but I soon discovered it’s actually a big synth being offered at a little price. Great value! Tommy Zai gives SynthMaster three thumbs up. Thank you KV331 Audio.

Synthmaster sounds great!

KV331’s Audio Synthmaster 2.5 is a pretty well rounded semi modular plug in. After using this as a plug in for the last 2 weeks I must say I am pretty impressed with its powerful capabilities. The program itself is pretty easy to understand and navigate through especially if you know the basics of most plug ins you wont need to use any help with this one. I think they offer online help but no manual is included. All of the basic functions of this program are very accessible.

SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

The Synthmaster 2.5 gave me no problems at all on my dual core system, I have been using it for 2 weeks now and testing in thoroughly so I can do a solid review and in my two weeks of using it, it appears to be very stable. I haven’t had a single crash up to this point. Everything works great, only downside is there are a few presets (cant think of the names right of the top of my head) that will eat up your cpu. Even running with ASIO drivers on a dual core system with plenty of ram. It still made my system “glitch” with these few presets.

OVERALL OPINION

Overall, I am very pleased with Synthmaster 2.5. I look forwared to using this program in a lot of my upcoming projects. One of my favorite things about it is that its so easy to edit the parameters of each sound pretty easy. Also, they layout in browser mode is very nice, how everything is laid out right in front of you and you can get to each sound you are looking for very easy. For the price of this product you will get exactly what you need/or are looking for. The price is very reasonable and makes Synthmaster 2.5 good competition for most of the leading plug ins on the market today. I do not regret using Synthmaster 2.5 and will continue to use it from this point forward Very good sound quality, and some pretty good presets. Most of my favorite sounds are from the basses and leads. The arps are pretty good too, Im just no big on arps anymore like I use to be. But I recommend the synthmaster 2.5 to all computer musicians looking for a great plug in. This is the way to go!

Tech. sheet

  • Manufacturer: KV331 Audio
  • Model: Synthmaster 2.x
  • Category: Virtual hybrid synths
  • Added in our database on: 11/03/2010

SynthMaster is an ‘all-round’ semi-modular software synthesizer and effect plug-in that features many different synthesis methods including VA, Additive, Wavetable, Wavescanning, Phase Modulation, Frequency Modulation, Pulse Width Modulation, Ring Modulation, Amplitude Modulation, Physical Modeling and SFZ Sample Playback synthesis.

With its multi-synthesis oscillators, analog modelled/digital filters, flexible effects routing with 11 types of high quality effects and a massive modulation architecture with 95 separate modulation sources and 650+ modulation targets, SynthMaster is a powerful instrument for all synthesizer enthusiasts.

FEATURES:

  • Cross-platform VST & AU: SynthMaster runs as a VST instrument/effect on both Windows and Mac OS X, and as an Audio Unit instrument/effect on Mac OS X.
  • 400+ Factory Presets: SynthMaster comes with 400+ new factory presets from a world class team of sound designers: BigTone, Ümit ‘Insigna’ Uy, Frank ‘Xenox’ Neumann, Teoman Pasinlioglu, Mr Shoufuku and Brian ‘Xenos’ Lee.
  • Semi-Modular Architecture: For each SynthMaster instance, there are 2 layers followed by 2 global effect send busses. Each layer has its own: Arpeggiator, 2 Oscillators, 4 Modulators, 2 Filters, 4 ADSR Envelopes, 2 Multistage Envelopes, 2 2D Envelopes, 2 LFOs and 4 Keyscalers. The modulators can modulate frequency, phase, amplitude or pulse width of the oscillators or any other modulators at audio rate.
  • Massive Modulation Architecture: SynthMaster has more than 650 modulation targets and 95 modulation sources including ADSR Envelopes, 2D Envelopes, Multistage Envelopes, LFOs, KeyScalers, Easy Parameters, Vocoder Bands, MIDI Velocity, Aftertouch, Pitch Bend and MIDI CC. Each modulation target can have up to 3 modulation sources. The modulation matrix, which has 64 available slots, has visual filtering as well so that targets for a specific source, or sources for a specific target can be filtered and shown on the user interface.
  • Easy Parameters: SynthMaster features 8 easy knobs and 2 XY pads that can be freely assigned as modulation sources, so that the complexity of the synth engine could be hidden away and only most important parameters of a preset can be controlled by the user. The easy parameters can be globally linked to MIDI controllers, and they can be assigned automatically by SynthMaster as well.
  • Powerful Arpeggiator: The arpeggiator in SynthMaster features classic arpeggiator modes such as Up, Down, UpDown, DownUp, UpDown2, DownUp2, AsPlayed as well as Sequence, Chord and Arpeggiate modes. Each of the 32 steps of the arpeggiator has its own Velocity, Note Number, Note Length, Slide and Hold parameters.
  • Basic Oscillators: ‘Basic’ oscillators in SynthMaster are capable of synthesizing many different types of waveforms: Sine, Square, Triangle, Sawtooth, Pulse, Noise, Wavetable and multi-sampled WAV/AIFFs defined in SFZ files.
  • Additive Oscillators: An ‘Additive’ oscillator is actually 8 ‘basic’ oscillators running together. Each ‘basic’ oscillator has its own detune, tone, phase/pulse width, frequency and waveform type.
  • Vector Oscillators: A ‘Vector’ oscillator consists of 4 ‘basic’ oscillators, mixed at different ratios. The mix ratios are determined by 2 orthogonal parameters in 2 dimensions: ‘X Index’ and ‘Y index’.
  • Wavescanning Oscillators: A ‘Wavescanning’ oscillator is similar to basic oscillator, except that the waveform can be scanned (interpolated) through 16 different waveforms shapes. The position of the waveform can be adjusted using the ‘wave index’ parameter.
  • Stereo Oscillators with Improved Unison: Oscillators in SynthMaster have stereo output. With the new “voices”, “pan spread” and “detune spread” parameters, each basic/wavescanning oscillator can have its own unison settings which eliminates the need to enable unison for all voice elements.
  • Analog Filters: The ‘analog’ filters are modelled after the famous ladder filter, so they self oscillate when the filter resonance is maxed out. They have continuously variable slope, which is unique to SynthMaster.
  • Digital Filters: The ‘digital’ filters are biquad filters with a hard limiter in their output. The limiter features an envelope follower with attack, release and threshold parameters.
  • Multimode Filters: With the new ‘multimode’ filter type, it is possible to switch from Lowpass to Bandpass to Highpass filter types continuously. For analog multimode filters, it is also possible to change the slope of the filter continuously from 0 db/oct to 24 db/oct.
  • Dual Filters: With the new ‘dual’ filter type, two multimode filters can be run simultaneously, either in parallel, or in series. The mix ratios between the filters, and the topology (parallel/series) between them can be changed continuously, as well as the modes and cutoff frequencies of the filters.
  • Comb Filters: Comb filters are digital filters used in physical modeling synthesis.
  • Before/Inside/After Filter Distortion: A distortion stage can be inserted before, after, or even inside the filters. For analog filters, the distortion is applied for each of the 4 filter stages in ‘inside’ mode.
  • Rich Set of Effects: SynthMaster features 11 different effect types: Distortion, LoFi, Ensemble, Phaser, 6 Band EQ, Compressor, Vocoder, Delay, Chorus, Tremolo, Reverb.
  • Flexible Effects Routing: Each of the 11 effect types can be inserted on any layer insert or on any of the 2 global effect bus inserts.
  • Microtuning: SynthMaster supports Scala tuning, so tuning can be set either for each preset or globally by loading from a Scala tuning file.
  • Preset Browser: SynthMaster features a comprehensive preset browser with separate search criteria for instrument type, preset attributes, music style or preset author.
  • Online Preset Browser: Registered users can upload their presets to the online preset library, or browse and download presets created by other registered users; using the preset browser right inside the plug-in window.
  • Multiple Skins: SynthMaster comes with 3 different skins in different color variations. Using the included user interface editor, users can not only customize the existing skins but also can create their own custom interfaces as well.
  • Import of MIDI patterns as Arpeggiator Sequence: Monophonic or even polyphonic (chord) MIDI patterns can be imported into the arpeggiators in SynthMaster by just drag and drop of the MIDI file onto the arpeggiator view on the plug-in window.
  • Import of WAV/AIFF Multisamples as SFZ definitions: Multisamples in WAV/AIFF formats could be imported into SynthMaster as SFZ definitions, by simply drag and drop of the WAV/AIFF files onto the oscillator waveform view on the plug-in window.

A demo version of SynthMaster is available at KV331 Audio web site. It is identical to the standard version except for 3 limitations:

  1. Saving presets is disabled.
  2. Mutes output and emits white noise at every 60 seconds.
  3. Comes with 150 factory presets (demo users can check out the remaining factory presets from the online presets browser though).
