Vox solid body with their cool pickups

Vox SDC-55Published on 01/12/12 at 21:14
When you think about innovation in the guitar world Vox isnt the first company that normally comes to mind but if you look what they have been doing lately it is an accurate label for them. I played their HDC-77 recently and it was a breath of fresh air into the semi-hollow scene. This guitar is great in just about every area. The guitar has a mahogany body with a maple top. The set in neck is a 1 piece mahogany neck. The tuners up top are a set of super smooth Vox tuners. The bridge is their own design it is kind of like a tune-o-matic with the stop tail incorporated into the design. It is a big solid piece of metal. The set in neck is a 1 piece mahogany neck. The tuners up top are a set of super smooth Vox tuners. The bridge is their own design it is kind of like a tune-o-matic with the stop tail incorporated into the design. It is a big solid piece of metal. The pickups are a set of the super cool Vox Coaxe pickups. The controls are a master tone and a master volume with a 3 way switch. There are 2 smaller switches to control the mode of each pickup.

UTILIZATION

This guitar is super comfortable. The whole body has an arch to it even the back. The back has a nice belly cut as well. There is a cut away portion where the neck joint is for better upper fret access on the neck. The scale is 25.1 inches so you get a bit less tension on the strings for ease of playability. The frets are finished to perfection. The action was set up beaufifully. This combined with the arched body means this guitar instatly feels like a part of your body. It is very light and perfectly balanced as well to help acheave this.

SOUNDS

These Coaxe pickups could be game changers in the guitar world. In the age of modelers these pickups do everything and do it the old fashion way. They are like 3 pickups in one. Each pickup has a set of rail magnets with a set of pole pieces inside them. This provides great noise cancelling but also gives great tonal variety. Each pickup has a mode selector 3 way switch. You can select what kind of tone you want from each pickup independently. The modes are clean crunch and dirty. You can get a single coil tone, a p90 tone or a humbucker tone. Having all these tonal options without modeling is something you dont see on many guitars. When playing you will naturally be able to select the combination you want. The single coil setting had a great bell like tone. The single coil setting gets you nice twang in the tone. While the P90 setting has angry and snarled like you would expect a P90 to. The humbucking setting was nice and smooth and sounded like you would expect a guitar that looks like this to sound. The jazzy tones just fly out in humbucker mode. The sound is super smooth.

OVERALL OPINION

If you are an old school guy but want a super versatile guitar this Vox is a great option for you. The ability to emulate the tones of 3 different kinds of pickups at will on each individual pickup without modeling is something most people think is impossible. When guitar makers are not afraid of change they can do some great things. If Gibson or Fender did something like this people would be screaming from the rooftops about how awesome they are. Vox has done it and its flown under the radar for a while. If you are looking for something versatile and somthing different you should check out some of Vox's offerings.

Guitar made in Korea
features on the manufacturer's website: http://www.voxamps.com/uk/guitars/series55/
Note 2 microphones (one inning, one bridge) splitables three positions:
- Singlecoil
- Singlecoil typed P90
- Humbucker
Each microphone is individually splitable

Three position switch: Neck Pickup / Pickup Neck + Bridge Pickup / Bridge Pickup

The bridge is typical of aluminum very special design for Vox guitars.

UTILIZATION

The handle is a treat for my taste, a real highway. Access to the latest frets (with a smashed box / sleeve on the junction) is surprisingly easy!

UTILIZATION

The handle is a treat for my taste, a real highway. Access to the latest frets (with a smashed box / sleeve on the junction) is surprisingly easy!

Gets it easy to sound good? One branch and it sounds like hell on whatever opportunities that offer multiple settings (microphone selection and splitages thereof)

My hands, my ears never tire of playing it!

The violin is very well finished. This guitar is both aesthetically beautiful finish that perspective. But I would have liked the presence of a pickguard.

It is very light, the ratio of proportion neck / body the imbalance by the bite of the handle. Can be compensated using a strap that does not slide easily on the shoulder and / or ballasting the pots cavity in the body. Apart from this minor inconvenience, lightweight and ergonomic body make it very pleasant.

It fits perfectly the agreement.

Even before the boost, vacuum, this guitar makes a good impression and play standing pressed against the body, you can feel it vibrate nicely!

The Vox was set at the factory with a high action. But it lends itself very well to be set low action. It becomes very quick to play.

SOUNDS

This guitar can play everything - or almost! With all the combinations that allows splitage each microphone independently selecton the microphones, and excellent tone control is surprised to see the possibilities. You can spend very jazzys sounds or clean sounds very "single coil" (note, however, is not a Tele or Strat!) Other fats that are very reminiscent of a classic SG. Humbucker in position with an overdrive (I use a Okko Diablo Gain +) or with tube amp pushed to its limits, it can send wood! The volume knob plays the role perfectly control distortion: a simple volume adjustment, a slight crunch we go to the big sound. Sustain also feel good on a Les Paul and Vox crunch without being asked!

A note: whatever position splitage or selection of micro, microphones are wonderfully quieter than most other guitars I've tried!

This instrument (given its price range!) Is a marvel. When I play on my 112 combo Egnater Rebel is in clear or distorted sounds a treat. What to rival far more expensive guitars!

OVERALL OPINION

Apart from the lack of pickguard, I think everything on this guitar is remarkable given its price.

Note that some videos on the internet can give you an idea, but none seems to do justice to the multitude of sounds that can be drawn. There are many clips that show different combinations splittage microphones, but (this is probably due to the acquisition of sounds and compression of audio track for the web) the differences are not so obvious that true, and with a good amp! ...

Not only do I do this choice, but the more I highly recommend it!

I have a Vox TCS 55 for 9 Transredes mois.Eh bin is the total growing:

* The violin is beautiful (domed center, trapping ergonomic), wood grain and binding are superb white cream is super class (body + head + neck). The gloss gives everything a nice cohesiveness. Me, I love its shape, its curves and its horns can find it too wise, or earlier, but for me (not a real fan of SG) is a brilliant interpretation of this form (rocker less spread out). Above all, it is characterized by its lightness and a great grip. The handle is a delight. Me, I love its shape, its curves and its horns can find it too wise, or earlier, but for me (not a real fan of SG) is a brilliant interpretation of this form (rocker less spread out). Above all, it is characterized by its lightness and a great grip. The handle is a delight. One small problem: the head is wide and slightly scratched, it has a little tendency to pitch down and establish his balance quite low, which is confusing for a guitar player playing with the statement handle well and the guitar on your knees! My comparison: I have a strat mexico, 1990, the gameplay is a little rougher on the Vox and gives the impression to earn more (run a bit wider, different balance), but set (action fairly low) SDC 55 is a marvel of rock and sends very big.

* The microphones Vox Coax, are simply MONS-TRU-SELF. : They all boarded a single coil and a humbucker switch = system switches from one to another, independently for each microphone. And general micro switch can then choose: stick, bridge, or both. The main result is a multiplicity of config no breath sounds or hum any of these configs, it's just huge! clicking sound in a pure clear to casseroles or gentle phrasing more flexible, a terrible crunch, and a sound beaten along with the humbucker, all with tremendous sustain (the handle is crossing) and without a hair breath no part (a feast for the palm mute). In my opinion, she can walk quietly in all styles Zique. Me, I'm surfing the funk / rock to metal and very heavy through the prog, and my 100 watt lamps, it sends harsh!!

* Having a crush on this guitar, I have not tried others, I even bought online in England without ever having seen ..... The price / quality ratio is 10/10, c is an instrument "midrange" very high level. I would do a thousand times that choice, and I am delighted to have this next to my Vox Start!

* Remember, 10/10: violin making, the weight, the microphones, the price, class.
