    MXR MC402 Boost/OverdrivePublished on 06/29/21 at 06:41
Gibson classic 2005/Fender Hot Rod 40 . I use this pedal from three years and i love it for the Fripp/McLaughlin sound that it give to my Les Paul and for the neutral work of the boost section that permit to jump out of mix in clean and distorted mode easily . The only minus , to me , is the low quality pots , scratching and loosing signal easily , problem solved with a very good USA contact cleaner . ( Deoxit dn5 )

the drive is a drive-type fuzzy there is absolutely no logic in TS9, again this is to enlarge a rhythm or lead mode by coupling to a middle drive gain, we get a view DS1 a RAT, we arrive at a rather nice distortion, there to lead more pronounced I found the perfect, it's still less than the vintage DS1 or RAT, but the result is quite satisfactory, knowing that I'm on a Mark V and have a sound like that it is rather surprising to see inatendue

    OVERALL OPINION

For my part I am overwhelmed by this pedal, it has me cleanliness but I intend to kept because for Lead or thicken rhythm I think it does great especially with a middle drive gain, or TS9 SD1 sounded a bit feeble on the Mark V and added more breath so the combination was just average ... but this is good this is more than perfect ... I do more than to find one. ..

    SOUND QUALITY

This is where it goes bad ... The boost is pretty clear but still saturates quickly, which we do not want to necessarily with this kind of effect. As for overdrive, distortion is a typical heavy metal ... So it was not what we were promised. Researcher a nice bluesy saturation, go home, there's nothing to see! And if you push too much distortion (more than half), we got all the sound was no more dynamic.

A typed object therefore we like it or not.

    OVERALL OPINION

I used it a year or two (my memory fails), I tested many boosts and many overdrives, so I know whereof I speak, and the quality / price ratio is high.

So I do not advise to see what kind of effects. However fans of Iron Maiden and others may find something that suits them. We find the quality of manufacturing dunlop / mxr / custom audio electronics, but the sound is too closed in style.

    SOUND QUALITY

I said at the very beginning, it is a real distortion, not overdrive. Indeed, the headroom is more than comfortable but especially the sound has nothing to do with OD: a real distortion with a modern and fairly bright sound. We are so far authorized by overdrive sounds. Note that even when the gain is at maximum, the effect turns a slight fuzzy trend.
The output level is consistent, effective and progressive gain tone: here is a pedal (for the distortion part) well-designed, versatile and measurable at will.
The boost is in all respects, the MXR / Custom Audio reference MC401. This is a real boost, rather transparent, which leads, depending on the setting, a lot of punch.
The two effects, one suspects, goes very well.

    OVERALL OPINION

I absolutely love the distortion and boost. But again, in the case of distortion, it is a distinctive and modern sound.
This pedal blends exceptionally well with the Disto III of the same brand. I often use this combination by placing the MC402 first before the Disto III. This allows for an infinite sustain while tempering the aggressive side of the MC402, indeed, the Disto III looks like it rather a traditional overdrive with a vintage sound carried to the lower midrange and bass (with tone 12h). Suddenly, the two pedals to blend the best of both worlds and the resulting sounds are both hot and defined and, somehow, overlap two layers meet each, the basic timbre of each of her. It's pretty amazing and it has to be experienced to understand what I was trying to say there. This gives a very complex and rich sound, a sound that I love.
But in itself, this MXR / Custom Audio proves excellent. It is extremely quiet and even with the gain in depth and the boost engaged, it requires absolutely no noise gate. She responds, again, particularly in volume control of the guitar, even with LP and gain background, it is still possible to get a real clean sound by turning down the volume on the guitar. So handy! With a Strat, the sound obtained by lowering the volume is, to my taste, too dull and loses a lot in acute, but it is usual with the Stratocaster whose email is inferior to the Les Paul.
Finally, I recommend this pedal once it is by no means a warning overdrive yet.

This is a very nice pedal footswitch with two buttons and 4 settings.
Incorporates a boost pedal (Blue LED very pretty) and overdrive (including the filthy red LED is the image of the effect).
It's easy to use two effects, overdrive with a classic setting (tone, volume and gain), which is to boost, well, one knob is perfectly sufficient elsewhere.

    SOUND QUALITY

While there, BIG BIG black dot ==> What is this weird overdrive 80% of its food? At first the sound is good, a second later, it is to swallow before he could actually be heard! Clipping a monster to me frankly drunk! Some find this limiter is not disturbing for me I was frustrated at not being able to leave a note full well!
On the other hand the boost is simply excellent ... it must be enabled in order to continually landing slightly short of breath of overdrive. But then, my interest in this pedal and can use each alone, I have taken any overdrive pedal or ...
    Shame ... shame!
The sound of boost saves slightly average.

    OVERALL OPINION

I've had it for a day when I noticed this problem clipping, direct back to the seller who told me that this limiter is normal and that it was not a fault of the pedal as j ' believe dared hope.
A huge missed, especially a friend of mine has the boost (short) in the MXR is perfect in situations like this though!
Try it if you like Boost already sound dirty, but to go from clean to overdrive, go your way ... This pedal is unusable!
I put 0 for no boost anyway!

I put all the knobs of the amp in the middle, and I no longer play on the regulation of the focus MXR, a pleasure of simplicity

    SOUND QUALITY

One branch point and we play to the line. It fully respects my game and the qualities of the tandem strat / Laney.

    OVERALL OPINION

I use it for two months. I tried lots of models, including Some of these were good, but lacked the "little more", ie the boost, which forced me to have a more complex pedal. Since I have I no longer use my multi effects, which will probably be selling in no time! What I like most, therefore, the total simplicity, excellent sound and respect for the instrument and is Zikos Behind. What I like least? Nothing!
The quality price ratio? It's expensive but totally justified by the quality and solidity of the unit.

I think I would do without hesitating that choice, and another guitar player who plays with me will probably crack in no time ... and also abandon the multi effect for 95% of what we play ...

I is not 10 everywhere because it's not quite the sound of a historical layers on a marshall head of era, but with my budget (and my level guitar;)) I for some years of happiness!

This is one of those Dunlop manufactured, Way Huge designed MXR Dual function either/and/or boost/overdrive pedal.
0-20dB boost control, level, tone, and gain control for the overdrive section. I/4 inch input and output jack, 9 volt dc power supply jack. And of course 9 volt battery compartment.

    UTILIZATION

You can either use it as an up to 20dB clean boost, or an overdrive, or both together.
Manual is not needed, this is as simple as chaining a clean boost into an overdrive pedal.
Personally I likely would prefer it if you could assign whether it's boost before overdrive or overdrive before boost.

Personally I likely would prefer it if you could assign whether it's boost before overdrive or overdrive before boost.

    SOUND QUALITY

The clean boost side is great for sending stuff over the top, like in a high gain situation. My preference is to use it on a vintage amp that is cranked and starting to break up for a bit of extra "muscle".
The overdrive side reminds me of a smoother, less noisy version of MXR Distortion plus Script logo era. It reacts okay to single coils but used with humbuckers is where this pedal comes to life. Into a high gainer like a Soldano Avenger with low output humbucker the overdrive side alone will give you a very smooth liquid Allan Holdsworth type legato lead tone.
Using it together with the boost will tend to fuzz out the input of high gain amps, at least it does for my taste. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing, just look at what amazing gain tones have been gotten with Fuzz boxes. With single coils or guitars with low gain humbuckers into a clean amp it'll get the notes to pop and sing.

    OVERALL OPINION

What I like is the overdrive with high gain amp, and the boost with clean amps. I would've loved to have the boost after the overdrive on clean amps. This way the boost could have been used as a solo boost instead of an additional gain increase.
If you're longing for a pedal that will make for super smooth compression however having the additional gain increase of boost before overdrive this will be a pedal you should check out.
I believe they also sell a version that is only half the pedal, which if you're using it into a high gain amp with humbuckers might be a better fit.

I just tested it in stores but did not convince me at all.
I still tested other od the passage to see. There was the MC402 which was such a nasal sound ... Even the small MXR od was well in hand.

Clearly, the highlight of the pedal is the boost and in this case it is better to turn to mc401. Part overdrive not worth the trouble for me.

Basically I wanted a distortion pedal for a boost, why it worked well or very well, but the overdrive on a clean me cold.

It is special and I highly recommend you to try it before you buy!
