« A safe bet »

Published on 01/09/08 at 03:33
Model of massive spruce, back and sides flamed maple, golden mechanical.
3-band preamp with parametric midrange, a trimming capacitor microphone in his general, a master volume, a phase inverter.
Very good build quality in general.
The condenser microphone has a tendency to move, thereby distorting benchmarks and the sound when you are not careful (I stuck mine on a loop to a stem corte less mobile).
The overall aesthetic (Guitar golden completely) I like a lot, but does not match the photo Audiofanzine for coloring.

UTILIZATION

Very pleasant to handle jumbo strips very low.
Profile for a game easy and flexible, recalling a round of jazz guitar
(Rather late). We must keep a finger pressure firmer than my Lowden, for example, due to less high frets.
But for the accompaniment, jazz, bossa etc ... to my level of play is perfect.
I just tested a Taylor 312ce, and the handle seems quite similar, even if I did not directly compare to the yamaha. Note: I saw the height of the bar to the bridge down when I bought it.
The strong point of this guitar is the ease of handling. I have a lot more difficult now to play on my Lowden, because due to its deeper body, I can not see my fingers! The Yamaha is so comfortable on that side that I use regularly now.
The battery is easily accessible, but I do not understand the signaling low battery in the preamp: Theoretically it should light when the battery is dead ... Finally I use it for a year and have not had this concern on this side.
(Update 04/10/2007: When the light stays on after connecting the cable, the battery level is too low, and it must be replaced, otherwise the sound quality will deteriorate until it stops - its and seeing. Under normal circumstances, the light stays on one or two seconds then turns off slowly).
It is a bit heavy, but I usually played sitting down, so it does not bother me.
Agreements at stake beyond the 12 th case, it is much better than Taylor in my possession (312 and 414), because the heel of the neck and the body are aligned, not as sharp setback on the Taylors

SOUNDS

There is a key weakness:
- The sound is pretty average in pure sound, with an unpleasant effect of resonance (barrel) on the notes if ground (The first 4 notes of the G string), but this all over the handle. I think this is due to the shallow body. Note here deserves a 6. That said I've played in public without shame.
- The flexibility of the preamp and the quality of sensors mean that we do not hear of any problem in supply. The condenser microphone brings back the sound of the box, I like very little, or Larsen. It is set very low. but like that, I get the full range of sound that I want (+ Roland AC60). It has a thin, pretty and delicate crystal, we can make sweet or aggressive depending on the settings. There for me this is good. If I'm on the basal electro, I would 9.

OVERALL OPINION

I use this guitar for nearly 2006 with a value for money that I find amazing (I bought it new but stocking to 630 Euros). I had a favorite for its aesthetics, and that price, it became really interesting. If Taylor (414) I'm talking about above is interesting too, including the acoustic sound, it does not justify absolutely no cost 3 times the price paid for the APX
(For my taste, of course).
Added 03/11/2006: I procured a Takamine EF407 in time. The New Yorker has a more medium, catchy and distinct from each string in electronics (See Blues, folk English, energetic picking) that apx which seems more velvety, softer (See Accompanying song variety, arpeggios, sounds of [measures leap] from Boel / Roubach ...).
Added 4/10/2007:
- I just bought one with Taylor Expression System and I made a cable to floating ground. The first difference between impressive electro-sensor under the bridge and Taylor is silent when not playing. With the piezo, I always hear a slight hum, more or less important, even the yamaha.
- A specific Yamaha bp occurred more often: A huge roar or loud cracks sometimes when I play (false contacts). After extensive analysis, it appears that there is a pb in the sensor.
Added 09/01/2008:
- In fact it is an apx-9c
- I had a new sensor for 70 Euros which works very well. The background noise decreased as well.
- Since the purchase of the Taylor and Furch, I regard it rather as a very good backup guitar. It goes very well in a mix of trad group (accordion, flute, violin)
- It fell from its support on stage face against the ground: Not a scratch! Yamaha Vive!
Added 08/04/2011: I replaced the sensor, and in fact after consideration of the former, it was just a pin connection to the amp that was loosened ... Anyway, in electronics is still my "guitar back" after the Taylors: Too much!
