UTILIZATION
This guitar was purchased new and unplayed! When I opened the case I was happily surprised to see that mine had a much more colorful and nice looking inlay in the neck than the floor model I had tested out at the guitar shop, which was a stale looking off-white color. Mine has multiple colors and a lot of depth.
The setup of this guitar was impressive to say the least. The action was perfect as well as the intonation, and only the pickup height had to be tweaked to my liking. Great job and along the lines of Carvin and ESP in setup quality!
SOUNDS
I tested this guitar with my Dual Rectifier (which was in stock form when I bought the guitar, but has since been modified by Dave Friedman and retubed) and my Carvin MTS head. I also played this guitar through a Marshall JCM 800, a JCM 900 and a Mesa Boogie Mark IV.
Through every amp, the guitar delivered very nice, solid guitar tones. The Bridge position in this guitar feels nice and has a bit of an "airy" quality which I love, especially with the Mesa amps. I'm a fan of the Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge position, but I'm not sold on the Duncan Jazz model in the neck position. It sounds too glassy and hollow. It's difficult to describe what I'm looking for in a neck pup, but the Jazz is definitely not right for me. That's not to say that the Duncans are bad, I mean they are extremely popular and are preferred by many touring pros for a reason! Just not my thing.
Pickups aside, the construction and feel of this guitar are great. With some different pups, I think it would be perfect! Throw in the ability to coil-tap the pickups and you've got an instrument that's as versatile as it is gorgeous.
The guitar stays in tune very well also, which is a huge thing for me, being a lead player. I bend the strings a lot so I need a lot of stability!
OVERALL OPINION
As stated earlier, aside from the neck pickup not being completely to my liking, this is a near perfect instrument!
The beautiful figured maple top, great feeling neck, quality components and versatile pickup selecting configuration make this a great value for guitarists of any level and budget!
