It's good for someone starting out, not sure full fledged productions could be made on this thing. Overall I would still try it out at a Guitar Center to see if you like it.
Overall it's a solid machine for someone who wants to step up from say the MPC 500 or 1000, but can't afford a 5000 or 4000. The price is reaosnable nowadays, you might find one on craigslist for anywhere between 300-600. I am glad I used this MPC because I churned out some great ideas with it.
The Akai Professional MPC Studio is powered by your computer via USB. It has a 64 track sequencer and no MIDI on the actual unit. So if you already have a good interface that has MIDI then this MPC would be just as good for you as the Renaissance would, and it cost about 60 percent cheaper too!
