The power advertised is undervalued. This amp "sounds" right and very strong. The power is more than sufficient and appropriate for many scenes. In concert / bar or smaller room, it will do much to himself, for larger rooms, simply the "dub" or live with the stereo outputs or with microphone (s) to HP. I've never had to go beyond the "5" volume ... Compared to many other amps (and I had the opportunity to play many of them, including lamps), c is a powerhouse almost embarrassing at times ... A "home", do not count beyond the "2", and again!

    UTILIZATION

The config is very clear. The manual is more than enough (still available on the Roland site), but we can manage easily. As for the sound, it is very quickly his happiness, it is not a "gas factory".

    SOUNDS

The clean sound is downright lens! this is THE clear sound of jazz chorus, legendary and characteristic right! despite the "all transistor", I (and apparently I'm not the only one) is the warm. It is by definition, "the amp from clean" the sound, combined with the "chorus" make it difficult, when we played with, move on to something else. This amp is a very "typical" in that. Jazzmen (priority) will find them, but not only them! It is perfect for many other styles (blues, it is also a treat) ... Only reserve some distortion is often criticized ... we must recognize that this is not really the best "distortion" of the world ... but rather see it as a combination "fuzz / vintage crunch." For those looking for a real distortion, it will probably add the overdrive pedal ... and there is no problem, it sounds!
Whatever the guitar, I play sometimes with a semi-hollow guitar (ES -325), sometimes with a "strato" or a Godin Artisan is always a great sound, it's the "poly-compatible". Note that some use with a keyboard in "low" input.
I put 9 for sound, it is well deserved (if the distortion had been better, it would have to 12)!

    OVERALL OPINION

This amp was through the JC series between the stereo big brother JC-120 (which is still made) and "small" JC-55. I acquired a quality / price very interesting report by redeeming (2200 francs at the time) to a friend who used it very little. In fact, I think this amp is well worth the price in terms of its qualities (The Son, reliability, robustness, ergonomics, etc ...). I bought it after using it a lot on stage and it has never disappointed me. Today, after more than 20 years of use, I want more and even if I happen by lazy to use another small amp (lighter to carry) during rehearsals, it's still my JC-77, which provides in benefits. In practice, the only 2 cons (relative) I can find him is his weight (19 kg), but this is nothing compared to the JC-120, which is not far from two and a slight hiss (white noise), not really a problem and you get used to very quickly.
Finally, it is not a coincidence that this amp (either version JC-120) is still used in "backline" (large scenes, recording studios and / or repetitions), his reputation is not overrated and if I dared, I would say that this is truly an amp he must have known.
Of course I would buy this amp (if only it was still made), and of course, if you find one used in good condition, go for it!

    Roland Jazz Chorus 77:
2 x 40 watts solid-state, two 10" speakers, aluminum domes, knobs: volume/high treble/treble/middle/bass/reverb + distortion (more to fill the space than anything else!) and (good quality) reverb + great stereo chorus with rate/depth, two inputs (high/low input) + independent inputs for the footswitches (distortion/reverb and chorus), and one stereo line out (not tested yet).

It's the small sibling of the JC 120 (and there's a smaller one, the JC50) with the same quality: 1 single channel... But what a sound: Perfect for jazz and even fusion with a good distortion or preamp (I use a v twin mesa boogie for distortion and it's awesome) and very, very solid! I only g…

I only give it 8 points because the amp is very particular and might not be the best for everybody, but the clean sound deserves 11 points!

    UTILIZATION

Very easy to use, the controls are precise and intuitive, you'll feel at home right away... The manual is easy to find on the Roland USA site, but it's useless.
The amp is very practical: stereo, with a marvelous built-in chorus and a good quality reverb (so no distortion), compact and not too heavy, no tubes to change (but it is nevertheless very loud for a solid-state amp), it's rock-solid. It works great with an acoustic-electric (Ovation CC057)

    SOUNDS

It's perfect for me but, fortunately, I also have the V twin: If you play metal it's not worth it, but jazzmen and fans of clean sounds in general should definitely listen to it (they are not very expensive secondhand: I've seen it on AF for $400... which is pretty rare): Some people have thrown away their Fender Twins after haring this amp... In my opinion, it perfectly translates the characteristics of a guitar: It doesn't alter the sound and the chorus is sublime... I don't know what to do with my Carl Martin now...
I was worried it would lack some power, but I was mistaken! It sounds really loud if you push it, it's perfect for rehearsals and clubs... But I'll say it again: The distortion control is only an embellishment (in the best of cases you can pump up the sound a bit... but I prefer to leave it at zero and use the V Twin), if you want some distortion you absolutely need a pedal, so I only give it 9 and not 10 points for that.

    OVERALL OPINION

I just got it today, so my experience with it is limited but I'm currently under its spell...I'll update my review in six months to counterbalance my enthusiasm! lol
Being critical about it: There's a light background noise (but it isn't really annoying), I have 2 or 3 pots that hiss a bit, but if you apply some contact spray it's gone. Other than that, the amp is in very good shape, considering its age (20 years or more). The protection fabric has a small rip.
If you are looking for a clean sound, it's a great deal for the price (with a very, very good stereo chorus, which only adds to the allure! I'm doing a comparison with my Carl Martin, which is a standard reference, and I must say that I'm very impressed by the JC!), it's definitely its main strength! I was looking for an amp for jazz and I found it: I have tested lots of much more expensive amps (Fender Hotrod, Mesa F30 and MarkIV, Peavey Classic 30 ... tube amps, as you have surely noticed) and this one is really the best compromise given its price. You only need to add a quality distortion to it (a tubes distortion if possible) and you have a perfect setup...

2x35-watt solid-state amp with standard connections

    UTILIZATION

It's very easy to use! You only need to read what the controls say! lol!

    SOUNDS

The clean sound is perfect, it's almost like listening to an acoustic! lol! It's a standard! It's easy to start playing clean and forget about the distortion!
The distortion isn't the best! You can't change it much with the EQ, but it's nevertheless a nice distortion.
Jazzmen will certainly rejoice playing it.
Personally, I play rock and to play with distortion you only need a pedal!
It's way more powerful than I expected, it's surprising!
The mark I gave it is for the amp as a whole, but the clean sound deserves a 10!

No need to add anything here.

    UTILIZATION

Very easy to use, intuitive. You get what you want quickly. No need for a manual.
Amp for rehearsals and small venues. It doesn't have too much power.

    SOUNDS

Superb, beautiful clean sound that respects the instrument, well-balanced tone. Nice chorus, good reverb. What a delight with a Telecaster!!!
On the other hand, consider a pedal for overdrives and other distortions because it wasn't conceived for that.

    OVERALL OPINION

An amp turned into a myth for its clean sounds and chorus. SRV used a jazz chorus. It's a reliable amp, like most Roland products.

    SOUNDS

The sound of the Roland Jazz Chorus 77 is pretty awesome overall.  I love the straight clean sound as it has a lot of depth to it and the effects are all really good as well.  The stereo chorus also has a lot of depth and is quite rich sounding and is probably the best effect that this amp has the offer.  The reverb and overdrive are both pretty good as well but the chorus is the best of the three in my opinion.  I usually use this amp with a Fender Strat of a Gibson SG for recording and I can get some pretty awesome sounds with this amp.  It definitely has its own style and is one of the best amps that Roland has to offer.

    OVERALL OPINION

I've been using the Roland Jazz Chorus 77 for a few years and I've found this to be a great guitar amp.  While it works in certain situations better than in others, it will work for just about any type of music as it is pretty versatile.  The price of the amp is about right and is what you should pay for an amp of this caliber.  If you want a great guitar amp with some cool effects this amp is definitely worth trying out.
