Ampeg BA-115HP

I bought this little powerhouse at a local music store. I got it for $899.00 Canadian. I needed a decent amp that could be heard over drums and that could be used for small gigs, with out spending tons of money on a stack.

It is really simple, fairly large, and extremely loud. I only have to turn the master volume up to 3 to be heard over the drums. Its got 220 watts of power exiting through a single 15" speaker, it makes your guts vibrate. Its 3 band EQ is really straight forward, nothing complicated at all. One of the coolest things is that it a has mute switch that mutes the sound so you can change basses quitely, and it also has a built in tuner. Mine came with wheels, which makes it easy to move.

Its weight! Holy man, it gets to be quite a pain in the ass when you and your bandmates have to drag around this 80 pound monster up and down stairs, ect. (it says 80 in the catologue, i swear it feels more like 100) Luckily it comes with side handles, which does make it easier. Also, the tweeter hisses when you have it up at a high volume, but when you are playing with a band, its not noticable. Thats about it.

Construction is excellent, extremely durable. I have slammed it around so much hauling it to and from places, but there is nary a scratch in it, and still sounds awesome, exactly like the day I bought it.

This is a kick-ass bass amp, definitely recommended for someone who plays in a band and does small to large gigs but doesn't want to spend $2,000 on an SVT or something like that. More than enough to make the neighbours complain.

UTILIZATION

Simple configuration but it is not his sound in 5 minutes you have to look a minimum and adjust the settings with the Style button to change the sound dramatically.

The sound is flat good. Naturally very round and warm but we can get a much higher pitch by turning the valuable Style button.
After that depends on the bass used but even my Squier midrange sounds perfectly with this amp

SOUNDS

At home on ALL styles except as extreme Metal etc ... but even better on the Reggae, Rock, Funk, Pop and Soul.

We get the sound you want by searching a little, but greatly colors the sound of your bass Ampeg way, we like it or dislike it try.

I love the style position 2 we obtain a well-rounded sound, deep and warm wishes
I never use the 5 position style too acute for me

OVERALL OPINION

I used since 2013 to gain 5 and 7/8 max volume if the neighbors call the police (no kidding!)
After this course it is still not out 220 watts planned and it is unacceptable to put it forward for selling.

I tried the Fender models and others in the same price range but they do not suit me.

What I like most is the style I find very effective position 2.
What I hate is the famous Tweeter makes the sound of the amp disgusting! luckily I disabled because it completely distorts the sound and breath creates and amplifies noise.

The quality is there to share the good Watts announced but it is very expensive and the Tweeter is extremely unpleasant.
For once against disabled the sound is very good but it is subjective, try.
A buy without hesitation if the budget is there even if it costs an arm competition at the same price seems to me average

I think everything has been said previously. Among other things, convenient XLR output for recording. Still lack a loop in and out effect. Too bad ... But we can not expect too much at that price.

UTILIZATION

Very easy to use. Plug and Play! The five positions are pre EQ to set a good beginning of his. Then everyone left to find his own sound.
Small problem, I find that having an active EQ is a shame. So you can lose power. I seen a more passive EQ, not to alter the power and can really tamper with the sound.

SOUNDS

I think it is appropriate for the rock very well. A well this encompassing, exhilarating! With my Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass V and a BOSS ME-20B (used mostly as a compressor) is a pure pleasure. Ampeg made in the grain is to go! Although round properly. What a pleasure! Even with my B string, I think it holds up.

OVERALL OPINION

I have for some months. I think this amp is a good compromise to play in bars, but a bit small for larger scenes (at the same time it is not what is asked). Weight level, well let's say it weighs a dead donkey. But in death of death! Fortunately, the wheels and side handles are there, damn it helps. Following is a combo, so nothing to pay more. By branches against you and it sounds now. A real pleasure!

The value for money is good, I think that price level / power you can do better, but those who love the Ampeg will not be disappointed. Top quality!

Contrary to what was said earlier, no problem blowing tweeter level. At least for now.

Not too heavy.

I do not know if one day I will use the CD input, but I imagine that some will use it for classes or click.

Too bad there is no separate volume for the balanced output

UTILIZATION

I already own an SVT 3 pro and an ampeg cabinet that I use in Isovent Festival. I'm a fan of the brand. I was looking for a more portable for club dates while keeping its ampeg. Well it's done! The 220 watts is really there and defend themselves very well against two guitars

SOUNDS

There are quite easily the typical sound ampeg. Vintage instruments (Rickenbacker, Fender Precision ...) will be thrilled. For active basses, I do not decide, I have not had the opportunity to try on this amp. This amp sounds best when it is widened slightly in the medium (Setting 2). on the other hand when you boost the mids and when playing at high volume tweeter tends to slightly vibrate. But honestly this setting is not really in good taste and not like the ampeg sound.

I tried the Ashdown because they are too small to high power amplifiers, but they do not play in the same playground ....
