Turtle Bass
« A super micro »
Published on 08/14/11 at 08:13It's been a while since I wanted to improve the sound of my fretless. Side violin is the Chinese choice of a small budget, the mechanics are poor, but the rest is honest. As against the pickups are lousy.
After a long look at what was done as a microphone, I chose the 6-string kit JBMorph CREL.
CREL why this choice?
I listened to samples of micro (from JB41 to JB62, and JBMorph kit) and I like the color of these two types of microphone. The kit offers the JBMorph two colors in the same microphone.
On the other hand, CREL is a small box fans installed in PAU 64, they respond to emails and telephone to explain and find solutions if necessary. We do not find it in Mr. Di, D Seymour or EMG.
I ordered the kit, wiring two push-pull volume + 1 tone, received within 10 days (holidays).
The pickups are simple, the wiring is neat, ready to install. The microphone cables are to be connected to two small screw terminals.
As agreed by telephone with the type CREL, I inserted a volume knob after the tone. Indeed, the two volumes provide a micro scale neck / bridge, and I set the master volume with my knob. I did a test before / after wiring, there is no loss of volume.
For cons, I had to replace the son of the tone knob because of my violin openings are spaced further apart than the standard used by CREL.Ce's OK, buddy soldering iron was there!. I'm sure if I spoke, they would have foreseen this.
I use it recently, but I can already say that it's magic!
The sound is clean, a lot of momentum means everything. The two modes each bring a distinctive sound, I finally deep bass and midrange very bright.
I discovered the potential of the violin with these microphones. The fretless sound is magnificent.
So, I think my amp (Ashdown MAG 300) is not bad at all!.
I just have to play better now ...
It is a view taken from life, not necessarily objective, but I took a slap at the first listening. I'm really pleased with this purchase.
Edit after repeat
I confirm, really good sound.
The two types of sound are well marked, the mix between mic is a plus and the balance between them opens up unexpected sound.
Other instruments are no longer scrambled by the merdiocre I had, all viewing is improved.
And what these dynamic microphones! My fingers brush against the strings to 10%, they murmur 10%, 50% j'enthousiasme, they give 50%, if I send 100%, they also send 100%: it is a feeling of power, a bit like a large capacity, and there is better than the highway!.
I turned my compressor that compresses my old pickups indynamique (had to be invented to describe the original soaps), it was very sad indeed. Well then, I left a little to save the amp, but it is a treat.
I have a second bass, I'll provide the CREL equipped with one of these days ...
Thank you to our team CREL correspondence and patience.
Thank you to all who Audiofanzine's published opinions. It is a useful source of information to help select the gear.
