The configuration depends on the sound card. Some cards are not recognized by linux. With an m-audio audiophile 24/96 no problem. There is no manual but there are many websites that can help when problems arise.
SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE
I use ubuntu on a PC purchased a year ago. It works very well with low latency.
OVERALL OPINION
It should be 2 years that I use ubuntu. Before I was in Susa. I wanted changed because many people use this system, although Suse worked great.
The specifics I love most: it's free and very complete. Synthesizers, drum machine, DAW ... are very complete. There are plenty of possibilities. All softwares are compatible with each other via JACK; There is to connect firstly the audio and the other MIDI. In addition there are regular improvements.
