The Fulltone Ultimate Octave is a stomp box designed for use with electric guitar. It can be used with any electronic instrument, but I've only used it with guitar. The pedal is standard as far as its characteristics go, since it has a 1/4" inch, output, and a nine volt power supply jack. This isn't rack mountable as it is a foot pedal.
UTILIZATION
The make up of the Fulltone Ultimate Octave is fairly simple, and at the same time there is a lot to work with here. The pedal has parameters for volume, tone, and fuzz, along with a switch to select either a bright/fat mode. It has two foot switches - one for bypass (on/off) and one for octave up. You don't need to know all too much about overdrive or octave pedals, but it will help to have a little bit of prior experience. I've never had a need to look at the manual for the Ultimate Octave pedal, and don't think that one is really necessary.
SOUND QUALITY
The sounds that are possible with the Fulltone Ultimate Octave are pretty unique to all get within one box. The octave features are limited, as I would really consider this more of an overdrive/fuzz pedal with an octave up feature, so the name is a bit misleading. I have used the pedal for a few recording sessions with a Gibson SG and a '65 Fender Deluxe Reverb, as I felt the SG was a good choice to work in tandem with this pedal. I do wish that this pedal with a bit more transparent sounding with its overdrive, but will do the job for times when you are looking for more thickness rather than transparency.
OVERALL OPINION
Being that the Fulltone Ultimate Octave is a pretty unique pedal, I wouldn't recommend it as your first or only overdrive/fuzz pedal. Rather, it is the kind of pedal to use in tandem with more traditional overdrives and distortions to lend support. However, every player is different so while I look at in this way, I wouldn't be surprised to find someone else who uses this as their go to distortion pedal. The price isn't the cheapest, but Fulltone puts a lot of care into their pedals, so you're paying for this upper end quality, which is worth it in my opinion if you're interested in this pedal...
