Everything has been said so very complete on this pedal, so I will not stay again in the details.

UTILIZATION

I bought this pedal in the mid 90's, when it was released and I played with it for many years. And looking for something else, I just ignored this.
Recently, I emerged from the box to plug it again!! Then disappointment ... I expected the sound was no longer meeting. At the time I had changed the original lamp (China) for a groove-12AX7 tubes. The sound was feeble, without a body .....
As I had several lamps in stock preamp (electro-harmonix, TAD, Orange) I tested these different lights, but nothing much to get excited, I said that these are all 12AX7 or ECC83 (europe standard).
Then I say, because this pedal does more for me in sound, why not sell it?
So I made on AudioFanzine to know a little the coast of these pedals. I stopped on the advice and I read a user had, like me, tried different lamps, one 12AU7, he said the lamp with the pedal sounded better.
I bought a 12AU7 happiness .... and there I found a sound that I did not expect, it's hot, creamy, in short I found my foot (thank you Owned by the way!) .

SOUND QUALITY

Start with the gain to a minimum, it's bluesy, if you push the gain can be played in the rock record. with a double in the config paul is hot, greasy blues of not passing the 70's rock, to hard or metal, that's where the settings are useful because they are very effective and very progressive .

OVERALL OPINION

I was eyeing other distortion pedals eg Mi-Audio Crunch Box, Fulltone OCD, vox satchurator, Way Huge Fat Sandwich etc ...
But I can tell you that now, more reason to part with it and only by replacing the lamp!
So to summarize: If you have a TK-999 in a drawer or the back of a closet, try to replace the original lamp with a 12AU7, it's worth its weight in peanuts.
