It is a transistor EQ API format.
3-band semi-parametric. The particularity of these is that the EQ Q tightens gradually as you increase the gain. C is what gives this incredible musicality this EQ.
The LF and HF EQ can operate shelf or bell. There is a filter that you just snap to cut very low and very high.
Each has 5 EQ selectable frequencies, which can be boosted by plus or minus 2 4 6 9 or 12 db. It sounds very basic, but the result is there.

UTILIZATION

You can not do something naughty with these small machines. We turn, we seek it opens its ears up to find his LE. 3-band c is sometimes just a little, and this EQ is for color or subtract large frequency ranges. Not really surgery (the plugs do that very well know).

SOUND QUALITY

The sound is really there. S It does not explain, but when passing a track in these modules, it appears with more presence and warmth.
Attention on the other hand, for those who want to learn old modules, this can take a breather. But that does not bother musicality, except to compress like a pig behind.

If I could I would buy a console API 550A EQ with 16 in 1608 and B. Small wonders.

The API Audio 550A is a very modern looking channel strip consisting of mic preamplifier, an equalizer, and a compressor.  The unit has both a solid state and tube make up, and you have the option of choosing one or the other.  It has a 1/4 inch input in the front for your instrument and XLR connections in the back.  This is indeed rack mountable and it will take up take rack spaces.


UTILIZATION

The configuration of the API Audio 550A Everest may look a bit convoluted upon a first look, but everything is split up into sections and once you analyze it a bit I think that you will find it is easy to use.  The mic pre section has a knob for gain and switches for a -20 db pad, polarity, phantom power, a high pass filter, and for choosing either tube or solid state.  Next you've got the compressor section which has the basic parameters often seen on compressors for gain, threshold, attack, and release.  You've also got a choose for mode between tight and classic. 


SOUND QUALITY

The sound of the API Audio 550A is just about as good as it gets for a versatile channel strip like this one.  It is suitable for use with just about any instrument or voice, as I find it has enough options to cater to any type of use. 


OVERALL OPINION

While the API Audio 550A does come with an extraordinary price tag, for those looking for an incredible channel strip for their studio regardless of the price, Everest will work for you.  I don't own one of these myself as I don't have the budget for a top end piece of gear like this, but I've used it enough in a professional studio that it keeps me coming back for more whenever I get the chance.  If you ever get the chance or have the money to buy a top end channel strip like this one, definitely take advantage of doing so!

The q is variable depending on the amplitude the more "at stake" is no more it tightens c see no reference a function that we would like to meet more often! ... equa the best in the world? in any case one of my prfrs! big big sound! Another particular feature: simply pass in (all zero) for magic opre! trs trs trs's good!! attention to more modern versions that sound harsh but too many c c not such a good or even 553 to 550a dchire also ... on its west coast has a price .... Stratospheric! The sound is priceless! You Save that stuff you hours of work and guarantees a peaceful sleep! I know something!

The API Audio 550 is a three band parametric EQ that comes in a module that will fit into the API lunchbox.  It is an analog unit and will not fit in a standard rack.


UTILIZATION

Using the API Audio 550 isn't too hard espeically if you have experience using console EQs.  Each of the three bands has knobs for cutting or boosting as well as the ability to choose between three different set frequencies.  The unit also has a low pass filter, a high pass filter, and an in button.  Even if you don't have experience with API EQs, this is a pretty universal make up and shouldn't take users too long to figure out how to use it.  I've never seen the manual for the API Audio 550 so I can't speak to how well together it is.


SOUND QUALITY

The sound quality of the API Audio 550 is absolutely crystal clear and has a top notch tone.  It won't color your sound at all beyond the adjustments you make using the EQ and it will make these adjustments incredibly cleanly.  I've used these EQs on everything from vocals to drums and I'm always astounded with the great clarity that these EQs come with.  It honestly doesn't get too much better for EQs unless you are looking for more control with more bands as this is about as clean as it gets.


OVERALL OPINION

I've been using the API Audio 550 EQ for about two years and I can definitely say that these are some of the best EQs that I've used.  API has a reputation for making crystal clear signal processing gear and the 550 is just about as good as any of their models.  I would highly recommend trying out these EQs if you are a professional looking for top notch tone even if it does come at a steep price.
