« Decent combo for solid state tones »

Published on 07/26/11 at 21:22
Hughes and Kettner have some of the best sounding amplifiers on the planet. This a German company who designs high quality guitar amps for touring musicians and the average consumer. They guitar amps that range from just a few hundred dollars to several thousand.

Some big names have pickup amps from Hughes and Kettner including Alex Lifeson from the band Rush and Tommy Thayer from the band Kiss. Those two gentlemen have their own signature models but they have used been great artist for this company.

This amp is the same amp as the head version of the Warp 7 but just in a combo version. You get the same features and tone as you would the head no no loss in tone and functionality.

An FX loop is on board ready to accept your fave multi-effector; an optional footswitch lets you switch channels (CLEAN/WARP) remotely.

SOUNDS

This was a very cool amp when they were manufacturing them. The speakers are a nice frequency that matches the voicing of this amp quite well. It had a nice growl to it with an ultra high gain metal voicing. These were for the metal Norwegian shredders and nu-metal type of players. It has decent clean channel but let's face it...you don't buy this amp for the clean channel. In my opinion it doesn't really need it as you aren't buying for clean but the super modern voicing and gain. However, it is a nice feature to have on tap just in case.

This amp takes any guitar well. You play anything with this amp and get a decent tone. With most Hughes and Kettner amps I like to play them with a good guitar with a humbucker style pickup installed. The highlight the gain very well in their amps and god humbucker sits nice with their voicing.

OVERALL OPINION

These guitar amps have long been discontinued. So the use market is the only way to go with these amps now a days. They can be found pretty cheap in the classifieds and ebay. I have seen them go used for right around $200, which is a steal of a price for this combo. If you need a decent solid state amp that you can play at home silently with the headphone hook up or an amp that has an MP3 hook up then this is good one.
