Older generation of Brent Averill 1272, so 1073 copy of a priori are the new copy of Brent since 1272 to averiil out a copy of 1073, before he had not the catalog, so that one could read on the manufacturer's website "copy of 1073 preamp, they are recognizable by their buttons notched in input preamp for gain, they are red as the original neve.

SOUND QUALITY

Very good preamp.
Its colors in the right direction.
I use it as a preamp main, just about everything going on inside except sometimes electric guitars flowing through a lafont is based on the case, the desired result (eg guitars thinner and more modern).
For example if I want a nice thick guitar and vintage enough, I glue a beyer M160 ribbon before and it sounds. On voice is just perfect with a BPM TB 94.
Of course everything is back in the mix without making a big correction.
Anyway ... this preamp with all natural sounds, light and thick.

OVERALL OPINION

I use it for 2 years.
I tried the pheonix DSQ4 I think, I did not like.
What I like most is the beautiful and natural look.
What I like least, nothing.
Or the price I paid in surplus stock with funky junk, nothing to say perfect report.
Today I think I will take a real neve 500 format, they are quite accessible.

This is a remodeling of a classic Neve 1272 solid-state preamp. You don't need to be an expert recording engineer to know that a Neve 1272 is one of the best preamps ever made, as it's been ubiquitous on many classic recordings. I wasn't sure how the Brent Averill would stack up but I decided to try it out. It's a solid-state pre-amp, just like the Neve. It's got your basic XLR connections though the one I used was in the studio already hooked up to the patch bay. It doesn't have the Neve EQ or compressors that sometimes were part of the consoles but it is dual channel which is nice. It can be racked too which is great.

UTILIZATION

I think this is one of the most basic preamps I've ever used. It has two knobs for input and output respectively. It also has a phantom power switch which is always good to have, as it negates the need for outside phantom power sources. There really are no bells and whistles on this thing, which will frustrate some but appeal greatly to others depending on how much EQ and compression they do from the preamp as opposed to using plug-ins or outboard EQs.

SOUND QUALITY

This is one of the best mic-pre's I've ever used. I haven't used it side-by-side with the original Neve's which makes sense, considering that most likely an owner wouldn't have an original piece of gear as well as a remodeling of it. But I have heard both of them in action, and I must say, that I really dig this one just as much as the original. It's crystal clear and highly detailed, with a richness and fullness that is fantastic. It is really transparent as it doesn't really add anything to the mix in terms of detail, but it does do a great job of preventing the signal from sounding flat. It has been difficult to get a bad signal with this mic pre as I have found that it works well in a mix with almost anything. In fact, I often need to EQ very little to get the sound I want, as it comes through usually just how I like it (assuming I am using good enough gear of course).

OVERALL OPINION

This is going to be an expensive piece of gear regardless, so that must be established first. Realistically, there is no need for anybody but a studio owner to own this gear, or at least somebody who does this professionally and needs a high quality piece of vintage gear to get his job done. If you are working with modern music and don't need pristine, high quality signal flow, this isn't for you. However, since we all want that really, I must recommend it to anybody who matches the description I just gave. It's got such a great sound and will never steer you wrong. I've tried lots of different mic pres but this one just rules. Highly recommended for anyone worthy of using it.

The Brent Averill 1272 is a dual channel microphone preamplifier designed piece for piece after the Neve 1272. The unit requires a power supply for it, which sometimes comes with it and sometimes does not. The unit has XLR inputs in the back and 1/4" inputs in front. It is rack mountable and will take up a single rack space in a traditional rack case.

UTILIZATION

Even if you have no or very little experience with mic preamplifiers, the Brent Averill 1272 shouldn't prove to be too hard to use. Having said this, it will mostly likely be the experienced users using the 1272 anyway, as this is a top flight piece of gear that is not to be messed around with. The 1272 simply has knobs for setting your gain levels as well as a knob for output level. It also has built in phantom power which can be engaged with a button. As you can see this is a very basic mic pre configuration and a manual should not be necessary.

SOUND QUALITY

Like the original 1272, the Brent Averill 1272 has one of the best sounds possible for a mic preamp in my opinion. I've never had a chance to shoot them out, but after using both this, the original 1272, and everything in between, I'd say that this does a damn good job of replicating the classic 1272 module. It is definitely the kind of pre that can be used to record anything and everything. It just has that mixture of clarity and thickness that I'm after with every recording that I do. This is one you must try and hear for yourself to believe.

OVERALL OPINION

Brent Averill is one of the best when it comes to recreating the classic Neve modules, and the 1272 is one of their best. You're always going to pay a decent amount of cash when it comes to Neve modules, but this one isn't overpriced or anything like that. This is made for professionals looking for sound quality regardless of price, so I'm assuming that if you're looking into the Brent Averill 1272 you understand this. Absolutely a worthwhile piece of gear to check and try out whether you can afford to buy one or not.
