All user reviews for the Seymour Duncan SSL-1 Vintage Staggered Strat

I have for two weeks. Before mounting the microphones had my original 2000 Fender American Standard, I wanted a more distinctive, more typical of the old fender, and after hesitating between those there, bare knuckles and MS Tornado, j 'I opted for SSL.
And I'm not disappointed! After assembly, which is relatively easy on a stratocaster, I was amazed by the sound. More defined in the neck position, the more rattled and really vintage at will.
For the price I'm really happy with the results!

For information they are mounted on all of Mr. Frusciante Stratocaster! (You can check, he said in an interview in Vintage Guitar magazine in 2009).

Small single coil alnico, everything is simple ... and more rustic. Poss since, wow! 17 years on one of my Lag, they suffered 17 years of change of gear, but they stayed. Mostly out of laziness on my part.

These microphones are in the stratocaster-like with a lot of FTA in the neck position, a sound sympathetically for chtites rhythmic casserole, my sound prfr as the combining of the single middle and neck: a sound dig hyper enjoyable listen, we never tire of it. A lil off-ct phase, what! The clean, the crunch, it's done enjoyable with these microphones. I prcise for more nags, no, you can not really make the extreme metal with these microphones. No, quite true.

They sound superb, it indniable. But I would have to move me to change them by more modern singles (like pseudo stacks), because these pigs the snore way too. And the volume is dirty dsquilibr dfaveur them with the SH-4 bridge in Mt.

2 micro SD SSL-1 vintage staggered mountains for several months on my Yamaha Pacifica 112: 1 in middle, the other neck. The bridge pickup is the original one (a double).

These microphones are really excellent in its clear! The sound is banging, but remain quite severe Submitted bringing warmth and roundness to the sound. No big diffrence in the clear between the neck pickup and the middle one.
The handle position intermdiaire / middle is funky wish! Crystalline trsractive your game
Intermdiaire position between middle and bridge SD pacifica is unfortunately rather dsquilibr for the bridge humbucker (much stronger), but it is workable and INTERESTED (quite incisive).
Microphones rpondent trs well for a crunch, but if you push the amp to drive a little further to get complicated! Grain microphones and low output level reserve them sound bright or low saturation. It is considered a rock of 60 ', but beyond the ssl1 s'avrent do not at all convincing. (Forget Rammstein, Metallica, Slipknot ...)
In his clear, and even more saturated these microphones have a fairly typical vintage. Perfect for the blues Steevy ray, a rock of Chuck Berry. The jazz musicians will also find their behalf, especially in positions intermdiaires.
Compared with the original pickups on my pacifica, they have an output level of just over leve (I think, vrifier), but also an attack more brand and more dynamic: the guitar comes to life!

I chose these microphones APRS their reputable, opinions I've read above and the samples on the site SeymourDuncan.
These are trs good microphones, a honnte price (68 euros pice), but lack of versatility and a level of output is often frustrating when you leave the clean channel of the amp.
I do not regret my purchase, but I think I'll have to turn to less typs microphones, with a little potato.

Seymour Duncan is one of the most popular aftermarket pickup makers in the industry. Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan are pretty much the standard when it comes to passive replacement pickups even though Seymour Duncan is trying to get into the active pickup game. The SSL-1 is one of Seymour Duncans most popular single coil models. When it comes to strat replacement single coils Seymour Duncan makes some of the best. Dimarzio tends to concentrate more on single coil sized humbuckers and modern sounding single coils while Seymour Duncan makes more of the true vintage sounding single coils. The SSL-1s are low output single coils with a very vintage voicing coming from their alnico 5 magnets. They come with a two conductor wiring setup and the magnets are staggered. These pickups are true strat replacements pickups with a true strat sound. The pickups are bright and clear sounding like you would expect with a set of single coils. They have a bit more low end than a typical strat pickup would have which is nice because most single coils need more low end on their sound. The added low end is very clear sounding so it doesnt make the sound muddy. The clean tones from this pickup are great you can really get a bell like clean tone with them. With some gain these pickups give a nice high end bite like you expect with single coils. They give a very old school gain tone because of their vintage voicing. I wouldnt bother trying to play metal with these pickups since they are single coils and do have a vintage level of output. These pickups work in about every situation you would use a single coil in. If you are looking for some vintage sounding and vintage output single coils these are the most popular ones offered by Seymour Duncan.

The Seymour Duncan SSL-1 single coils are one of the most well known single coils that Seymour Duncan has to offer. The SSL-1 is a low output single coil that features staggered Alnico 5 magnets and two conductor wiring. It also comes in reverse wound, reverse polarity to work nicely in the middle.

The SSL-1s are very vintage sounding pickups that go great with Stratocasters. These pickups are fairly bright and clean sounding, but they also have a fairly nice bottom end. The highs are crisp, just like you’d expect from a single coil. The midrange is pushed back a bit to help give it some clarity, and the low end is very even sounding to complement the overall tone. Clean tones totally sing and can get an awesome Eric Johnson style tone. Chords are also very clear and precise sounding. Under medium gain, these things really have some nice attitude and can give sound great vintage style gain tones. High gain tones, however, are a bit lacking given how low output they are.

I’m a big fan of these in the middle position. Given that I tend to like hotter single coils, I prefer something a bit hotter in the neck. When they’re in the neck, they give a great clean and midgain tone, but for higher gain playing, they fight me too much in strats. Obviously, they’re a bit too underpowered for me in the bridge position, but they might work if you’re into more vintage style tones. In the middle position, it gives a great clean tone and leads to an awesome “quack” when combined with a neck single or split coil humbucker.

If you’re looking for a more vintage style single coil in the Seymour Duncan lineup, these are probably your best bet for the money. They’re great sounding pickups that should work in most situations.

I installed this pickup in the neck position and replaced it after two months with a Fender Tex Mex set.

I don't think it sounds very good. The sound was a bit too soft and the G string was too loud. Poor sound articulation compared to the Tex Mex pickups, which I like much more because they sound exactly like I expect Fender pickups to sound.

Considering that the three Tex Mex set is a bit more expensive than a single SSL-1, and that I had to replace a faulty SSL-1, which wasn't new (no sound on the A string and very thin sound on the higher strings) you'll surely understand why I don't recommend this pickup. And it generates as much noise as the Fender pickups. So you'd better buy the original in spite of their noise or even better, a noiseless Kinman. It's my personal opinion.

Update much latter: I installed on another guitar a reverse SSL-1 in the neck position and a TexMex in the bridge position (no middle pickup) and I get very good results. And with both pickups there's no noise. It's a true delight for clean, overdriven or heavy distorted sounds.

But the pole pieces are too far from each other and I had to install the pickup so that the pole pieces are exactly under the high strings (and fully misplaced under the low strings). Surprisingly, the sound remains alright.

As a summary, I would say that it is very difficult to choose the right pickup because it can sound great with a given guitar and very bad with another one. I wish you good luck...
