- moosersPublished on 02/07/11 at 15:49The Guild Thunderbird is a tube amplifier from about the mid 1960's. I've played a ton of Guild acoustic guitars, but until recently didn't even know that they made amplifiers at one point. For this reason I really don't have much backing information at all on this amplifier other than my own experience using it. I also don't know if this is the only version of the Thunderbird amp or if there are a few. I do know that it has two 12" speakers...

The make up of the Guild Thunderbird Amp has a good amount going on, but it's not hard to use. I would imagine that those using this amp have at least some experience with other amps, and if this assumption is correct, most users won't have any problems at all manipulating the amp. I love how much control is available here. Good luck finding a manual!
SOUNDS
The sound of the Guild Thunderbird Amp is definitely right in line with that heard from most other tube amps from the same time period. I've only used the amp once with my Fender Jazzmaster and was really impressed with it's super clean, but super full sound. One of the producers on site at the studio I work at has a ton of vintage amps including this one, although I don't get to try out too much of what he's got too often. The amp has reverb built in which is killer sounding! The amp in general is what you'd expect from a 60's tube amp, and it's great!
OVERALL OPINION
The Guild Thunderbird Amp is very rare and may as well fallen off the face of the earth at some point! There seems to be very few of these floating about, but I'm glad to have gotten the chance to use one of them. I don't know the exact year on the model that I've used, nor am I sure if it's the only one out there in the Thunderbird series. Either way, the Thunderbird is a classic tube amp, but it's not going to be worth it to seek one out since they're so hard to find...See less00
