- Four EL34 power tubes
- Three 12AX7 preamp tubes
- Half power switch
- Pullout gain switch
- Point to point wired
UTILIZATION
You plug in your guitar. If you want more bass, you turn up the bass. If you want more mids, you turn up the mid knob, you want more bass, the bass knob. If you want more volume… well… you get the idea. There is very little here left to the imagination. The only features are the half power switch (thus the name) and the pull out gain knob (which is not footswitchable).
SOUNDS
This amp does clean. It does mid gain, and it does high gain. Just not at the same time, since it's only one channel. The amp tends to be on the bright side, so always tended to pair it with a humbucker equipped guitar. At the same time, the amp puts out an amazing amount of low end. Not flabby, farty low end but tight, percussive low end. The type of low end that inspire you only to play palm muted because you like the way it moves the floor.
OVERALL OPINION
It's a well warn cliche at this point. The hot rodded Marshall thing. You can almost forget how, when they are done right, absolutely incredible they can sound. A few people have really done it right, and Fred at Divided By 13 is one of them.
This amp sits in the often odd man out territory between vintage and modern. You know, what was modern about twenty years ago? That is not to say it can't be pushed in either direction. The amp can do a clean to mean Plexi type sound, but in my opinion, the amp really excels at the more saturated high gain settings. Despite it getting fairly saturated, it is not voiced for nu or death metal. It's pretty firmly planted in "rock".
While this amp will not suit every high gain enthusiast out there, it will make them all smile. It scratches an itch that most all players get and many players live to get at. If you’re one of those players, check one out.
