« The amp to do everything! »
Published on 06/22/11 at 12:36Tube amp, 2 * EL34 power, 2 channels, Accutronics spring reverb.
Level settings, you are entitled to: 3-band EQ for each channel, presence control (harmonics), gain and master on boosted channel, volume for the channel clear.
A button for the twang (change the sound of the clean channel), another boost for the (saturated channel only).
At the rear, the balance for the reverb (can not put the reverb on one channel or adjust the balance between the two channels) and a second volume knob, to boost your solos ... But only boosted channel! (Damage). Incidentally, these two small buttons are not very practical to run, but we will not complain, once settled, there is more editing in general. [NOTE: the first head I had, there were two very useful buttons instead of two little pokey things that I have now ... Probably it has been fixed on the latest version of the amp ...]
In terms of connectivity, a 4 ohm output, a 16 Ohms, 8 Ohms and 2.
It is also entitled to two footswitches, one in three functions (provided) and the other 2 (optional):
- Change channel, boost activation, activation of the second volume (solo)
- Enable / disable the effects loop, on / off the reverb.
In short, a very very very full amp ... I do not know what we can ask for more!
The second volume is only available on the channel is saturated defect as an advantage: you can go from a clear rhythm in the solo, without having to juggle the buttons at the fateful moment, just before the snap to change channel, and everything runs perfectly!
Incidentally, the footswitch is good, with a space between the buttons perfectly, you do not press another button without express ... But if you will, for example, engage the boost and the second volume (or channel saturated and boost), it can be done with a single kick!
Too bad the twang is not activated at the base and there is not a second volume for the clean channel, but that quibble!
Excellent what
UTILIZATION
One branch is allowed to heat up, we play, it sounds!
The manual is clear, but not fundamentally useful ... I would have appreciated some ideas "type settings", but hey, it's no big deal!
on the other hand, 50W ... Ooch! Hard to use at home. I opted for the volume pedal in the effects loop for deaf not to finish, as we move immediately to a completely smothered her with a sound that face ... But the pedal does its job and you do not lose too much in the end, even if it's not worth a good pad I guess.
As said, this is perfect, a sound that is clear and well defined even cranked balloons.
SOUNDS
So I scratched at a BC Rich Warlock Bronze Edition of cardboard that sounds (and I use most since I almost Statesman ...), and a Washburn N4 mounted with a push / pull and Bill & Becky in the bridge (micro less garish than the basic Bill Lawrence, but in the same vein).
For the speaker, I have a Framus CS212 mounted Celestion Vintage 30. It's pretty good, although I intend to change HP's probably Eminence.
I play mostly "rock", very little metal (say that Rage Against The Machine is a hair metal ... Metallica to pass the time, a bit of Pantera ... In short, not too much metal!), not really jazz, even if I try to put me, a little blues, some punk, some funk ... Well, I touch all we'll say!
Honestly, it sounds in all registers. The presence control allows for a more "vintage" or more "modern" gain in depth, substance and presence boost engaged, it's a butcher! But I use it mostly to the gain at half and even the presence of: a big fat saturation already, the boost can add more when I need it, so good. It ensures that in all registers. In return, it does not have a great personality, he is not "perfect to play this style of music", but everything sounds honorable. It was the choice between versatility and typed: for sure that Orange would have kicked well, but probably would have been a failure for my use.
The clean channel is divine, I'm not sure you need to develop more ... The twang really changes the tone is very nice, too bad there is no footswitch for on / off! So it is almost always on me ...
The reverb is gorgeous.
In short, an amazing clean channel, a lead channel that perfectly matches the idea that I get the "good rock sound."
I do not know what lights are mounted original, but it is likely that the change, it is even better!
OVERALL OPINION
I had ordered in black on a German site - H & K is not imported to France I do not know why.
I had problems for 6 months: after a few weeks, I realized that again, saturated with high-volume, the sound became informed of the slurry, it was horrible (when everything worked at the base). I sent the amp, they'll have repaired, returned: Tolex ripped on one side, footswitch broke out, and always the same problem. Bad joke, I struggled for six months with the VAS to get an amp that works.
In the end, they exchanged me in January 2011, a model for the dark brown was out of stock, with a nice little discount to the key (but largely justified). And then the slap! The sound is just fabulous, and light years away from the amp I had before!
I searched for over a year the amp perfect, I've tried tons of ... Koch Studiotone, Orange Rocker 30 and Orange Tiny Terror, Laney LC/VC30, Peavey Classic 30, Fender Blues Junior Hot Rod and Supersonic, Laney Lionheart, Bogner Alchemist, Rivera Rivera Chubster Clubster 25 and 40, and probably many others that I forget ... (Like, I also tried some Marshall of Blackstar, the Vox also Laboga Cayman, ...)
I wanted an amp usable again, but at home: hard! Above all, I wanted a 2 channel amp with a clear sound of thunder, but not too bad saturation and can Tatouille some big sound nonetheless. In short, the perfect amp With a budget of € 1000, I thought it would pose too much problem, and yet I struggled to find my happiness!
Orange Rocker excellent, but not usable at low volumes, I gave up. In addition, very expensive for the limited functionality that it had ...
Fender Blues Junior, very good clean sound, but single-channel, and probably too feeble for group play ... Besides the overdrive is very light.
Rivera Chubster 40 ... Ah, him I loved, but downright off-budget! (1400 € ... Opportunities nine very expensive and very rare) Very good clear sound, above the Statesman I think the channel saturated grain a little back from the H & K against (likely a little fuzzy, but more versatile I think), lots of features ...
But here, the head H & K to less than € 600, with a baffle to less than 300 €, the choice is quickly made! I tested the combo 40W, I loved the head offers interesting options (EQ separate presence control, and blah blah ...). footswitch For less money I had an amp almost as good as Rivera, who excels in all areas and with loads of extras super useful!
For cons, the Celestion V30, I think there are better for this amp, so I will probably change it in the future.
And also, very hard to use at home because of his power ...
But there's no denying it, it sounds! After testing nearly every tube amp 500 to € 1200, we will say (I eliminated all the amps automatically typed too metal, too focused on the amps sound clear or single channel ... And the time, prices were much higher I feel too.) I do not regret my choice! In his "normal" price (1000 €), the Statesman is a very good amp, but with the price off, it is the bargain of the century!
That little remains of his regret at low volume, but hey, maybe a change in HP will pay it a bit. (HP less efficient)
