The Zoom 505 II is a budget multi-effects unit for electric guitar, but can be used with any electronic instrument if you’d like to use it with something else. However, this review will only focus on the use of this pedal with electric guitar, as that is what my experience is with the pedal and that is what it is designed for. The pedal has standard ¼ inch connections, and I had is powered up with the Zoom power supply that came with it, and I’m not sure what voltage it is so I can’t say if another type of power supply can substituted or not. The pedal can’t be rack mounted – it is a stomp box.

UTILIZATION

Using the Zoom 505 MK II isn’t hard in any sense of the word. It is pretty fool proof as all you’ve got to do is pick your effect and choose what you would like to do with it. The pedal has up and down buttons to scroll through the presets and your settings if you have them saved. There is also a button for storing and for going through the bank and tuning calibration. Other than this, there isn’t all that much to work with, so unless you’re having problems with the storing settings or something like that, I don’t think you need the assistance of a manual.

SOUND QUALITY

The sounds on the Zoom 505 II aren’t exactly great, but for experimenting with different effects and getting your feet wet with them. It offers up a cheap pedal with a whole slew of different effects, including distortion, compression, phase, wah, delay, reverb, and on and on. There isn’t all that much control over each of these, but there are some adjustable parameters for each. The sound quality of the effects in general, comes off very digital sounding and not very full at all. It isn’t suitable for any professional, but like I said, for a beginner it will do the job.

OVERALL OPINION

The cheap price of the Zoom 505 II is definitely the best part of this pedal, as they’re offering up a whole slew of effects within a cheap, compact, pedal. The pedal is very light, and easily portable. However, unless you are new to effects and are just looking for a cheap pedal to get started with, I’d stay away from the Zoom 505 II.
