If you are looking to make great recordings and have a low budget I would highly recommend the tascam port studio 2488 to anyone wanting to get into analog mixing and recording. Unit also isn’t that heavy so you can take it around with your if you need it to be mobile.
What I find particularly magical about the Zoom H4n is that it just works. I do not actually own the product, but I know a bunch of people with them because of their popularity, and man, do I want one. The Zoom H4n is a portable recorded with two very high quality condenser microphones built into them, and it has two inputs for line or XLR in th...
The Pioneer RT-1020L is a reel to reel 1/4" tape machine for playing and recording. It can play either 7" or 10" reels. My parents owned this and I have since taken it under my wing to use and mess around with. While I've got a Pro Tools studio at home, I thought this would be cool to mess around with and perhaps provide some cool effects. W...
The Ampex 750 is a 1/4" reel to reel tape recorder. It's a 7" reel and has three speeds. I recently used the 750 in a unique way at a studio that I was working out. The studio doesn't use this for recording at all, but rather just for getting some tape echo. It's rather effective, but does take a bit of rigging up. Fortunately for me I didn...
The Tascam MS-16 is a 16 track multitrack recorder on 1" tape. It is generally set up for Quantegy 456, which is bias compatible with RMGI (Emtec) SM 911, which is still being produced, unliked the 456. The machine can also be rebiased and set for other higher output tapes. Mine is calibrated for Quantegy GP9, meaning that at such a high reco...
The Tascam MSR-16 is a 16 track multitrack recorder that uses 1/2" tape. It is set up for 1.5 mm thick, +6 tape, and in particular Quantegy 456. Although Quantegy 456 is no longer produced, RMGI (Emtec, and previously BASF, and previous to that AGFA) SM 911 will work just fine. Also, RMGI SM 468 can be used as well. My two MSR-...
The Tascam TSR-8 is an eight multitrack recorder that records on 1/2" tape at 15 ips. It uses 1.5 mm thick tape and is set up for tape like Quantegy 456. Although Quantegy 456 is no longer being produced, it is equivalent to RMGI (Emtec) SM 911. RMGI SM 468 will also work on it just fine. This recorder features dbx Type I noise reduction, an...
The Tascam 22-2 is a two track reel to reel recorder than prints to 1/4" tape on 7" (or smaller) reels in one direction. This means it will have the same amount of track width as a 2" 16 track recorder. It can be run at 7.5 or 15 ips and was designed to record on 1 mm thick, +3 tape such as Quantegy 407. Since Quantegy no longer produces tape...
The Tascam 238 is an 8 track cassette recorder that operates at 3.75 ips. It has the same recording head as the Tascam 688, which is superior to that of the 488 and 488 mkII. dbx Type II can be engaged across tracks 1-4 and 5-8 separately, there is a pitch/speed wheel that allows for plus or minus 15% change, the transport is digital controlle...
The Tascam 464 is a Portastudio designed to record 4 tracks onto a standard cassette. It features a built in mixer with three bands of EQ on each channel, XLR inputs on channels 1-4, and 1/4" inputs for the other inputs. It can record on up to 4 tracks simultaneously. The manual is very easy to follow, it is very easy to master after running thr...
