advice requested Pro VS Mini: how to control waveform mix with joystick on short envelopes?

I want to control the waveform mix with the joystick independently of the mix envelope. It seems to reset to an initial state with each new key press so the joystick has little or no effect. I have turned off the Mix Env Loop. What am I missing?
