The Digital Fish Phones SpitFish is a free de-essing plug-in that is free and available for both Mac and Windows operating systems. You can get it as a VST plug-in for both platforms as well as an Audio Units plug-in for Mac. You can download the full bundle of plug-ins that this is a part of, known as the 'Fish Fillets,' along with a plethora of other free goodies. It's an easy process and shouldn't take more than a few minutes to download and install it. It's also an easy plug-in to use, only with a few different parameters to be aware of. There are parameters for depth, sense, and tune, the latter of which gives you three different frequencies to choose from. If you understand the purpose of a de-esser and how it fits into things, you should be able to get a good grasp on how to use this plug-in rather quickly. I don't believe there's a manual for any of these Digital Fish Phones plug-ins.
SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE
I'm not running the Digital Fish Phones SpitFish plug-in anymore, but when I was it was as a VST plug-in for Windows on my old Hewlett Packard Pavilion dv8000 lap top. It had a 3.0 Ghz processor and 2 GB of RAM, which was enough for me to run plug-ins smoothly in Cubase SX 2.0 and 3. This wasn't the quickest system but it was still able to run this. I haven't used it on any other system, although I guess I could use the Fxpansion wrapper in Pro Tools on my current system, but I don't really have a need for it anymore...
OVERALL OPINION
The Digital Fish Phones SpitFish plug-in is one definitely worth checking out if you're at all interested in a FREE de-essing plug-in in VST/AU format. It's not the best sounding de-esser but still will get the job done, especially in home studio situations. If I didn't already have a few top quality de-essers I'd probably get it again, but for me it's really not necessary anymore. It does the job for getting the unwanted sibilance out of vocals as the parameters given are enough to make it happen. I'd encourage those interested with compatible systems to go ahead and give it try for yourself along with the other Digital Fish Phone free plug-ins...
