Topic Best weighted portable digital piano in Australia under $1000? (Donner?)
Hi, I did look and couldn't find a post on this. My soon to be 15-year-old son is an accomplished pianist, and we have a great old Yamaha upright at home. However, he wants a digital piano that we can take with us on trips to practise, and it needs to have weighted hammer action etc. He wants a few bells and whistles to mess around with too (tones etc). We've been looking at the Donner Dep 20, but I've read that it's more suited to beginner - intermediate, rather than advanced... https://donnermusic.com.au/collections/keyboards/products/donner-dep-20-fully-weighted-88-key-portable-digital-piano-with-sustain-pedal Can anyone please offer some advice?

From your son's situation, the Donner DEP-20 has merits as a portable digital piano but indeed struggles to meet advanced needs. Its 88 fully weighted hammer-action keys can simulate the touch of a real piano, and 238 tones plus 128 polyphony are sufficient for daily practice. However, compared with high-end pianos, it falls short in key touch delicacy and tone layering. Additionally, it only has a single pedal (no 3-pedal system), which is not ideal for advanced players pursuing expressive performance.
If your budget allows, consider Donner's DDP-100S from the same brand. It is also portable, featuring 88 fully weighted keys, a 3-pedal system, 200 tones + 200 rhythms, and support for MIDI and USB connections. Its sound quality and functions are more suitable for advanced needs, and there is a discount available now. If you insist on the DEP-20, it can handle basic travel practice but may limit your son's performance improvement in the long run.
