Published on 06/27/01 at 15:00Bought at local music store (Haight Ashbury Music) in Bay Area for $239. I am an experienced Guitarist (25 yrs) and wanted to learn bass along with my 12 year old daughter. I do expect to use this bass for some small and medium gigs. This is a short scale bass (~30") which makes it easier to play - and it plays and wears like a guitar.
Solid mahogany neck and body with nice finish. Looks good. Rosewood fretboard (I prefer, no shellac to wear off. Pots (vol and tone) work well. Good, sturdy adjustable bridge. Heavy duty tuners. Neck is straight as a laser. Big sidwinder humbucker pickup OK, not exceptional, but allows screw adjustments of each pickup to balance volume between strings. Good fat tone. Tone control has definite impact from skinny to fat. Good action. Fairly light. Easy to play/hold sitting or standing.
Wrestling with getting all the buzz out of the strings (E - 3-5 frets, and G, 4th fret only). Frets are even, but still buzz. May give a bit of bow to the neck to fix. I hear short string basses have looser strings which may account for buzz on E string. I can eliminate buzz by raising bridge - but I want as low an action as possible. Single pickup. Would prefer two - but this is a cost issue. A second could easily be added later. Although neck is rosewood, it is painted/stained. No case with unit. No hard case (with exact fit) available. Gig bag available.
Bridge, nut, neck, body, tuners all good. There is no binding on the neck - but this is a minor cosmetic thing to me. Mahogony body & neck looks much better than your standard painted bass - this is a definite one up in my book. Finish is great. I play an old Gibson SG and this is nearly as good. The pickup seems a little rougher than my SGs. Single piece neck not as good as Laminate neck on my SG, but it is straight and does have the lifetime warranty. Generally looks and feels like a much more expensive instrument -except for the sidewinder pickup (my opinion).
Single pickup. Short scale (has pros and cons) great player Excellent wood/body/neck. Solid hardware. and allows for adjustments. Great price/value. Needs hard case designed for it. Watch for buzzing. Be prepared to re-set up instrument. Try different basses. best short scale bass anywhere near this price range.
