Excellent
My old Univox was made in Japan in 1978. It has a maple body with a really weird build up of lots of pieces of wood (at least 6). As is natural finishing with a layer of paint that would be a bit hidden misery but this is obvious. A body normally consists of 2-3 parts which have at least the thickness of the body. Where there are two layers of wood at the thickness. The neck is maple with a rosewood everything more classic touch. Nothing wrong with that level.
I can not judge the mechanical origin (tulip-type) or the bridge (Fender folded sheet type) because they have been changed. The microphone was a classic split but has also been changed. The electronics are original with a volume control and tone. Well, nothing much to get excited. And in view of the heterogeneous body building is a somewhat dubious first glance instrument.
UTILIZATION
First surprise, the handle is a great handle PBass. Or too thin or too thick, cut to really rock. Access to the latest frets? Ben is a Pbass.
The bass looks a little forward (I HATE that) but it's not as bad (far from it) and the Thunderbird. If the weight is nice without being either too light or too heavy. For me, a slight bass is not an advantage. The wood is with a certain density to ring, and inevitably the instrument must be a certain weight.
Finally, to find a good, sound ... well everything thoroughly. Under the fingers or under the mediator, was a real pleasure to play this instrument, which has a real mojo. The very low action is super nice. A treat, especially after changing the bridge to a Gotoh better.
SOUNDS
Second surprise, the sound is absolutely excellent. I do not know what microphones were installed (although they were a few years and they are very good). Its pure mythical Pbass obtained with this small, friendly stuff not found on all models yet identical, even Fender. This is probably due to the wood was still dry for 35 years. I'm not going to insult you describe the sound of a Precision but when I play, I immediately think of the Clash.
I play with a Chillbass B200 and 2x15 "of the same brand, as well as effects and Mazzette Arts In Bloodshed. As I play stoner, my gear orientation vintage copes well with its PBass. Sound is also very good with a small config apart.
I would find it difficult to explain how it is possible to get as good a sound with a bass that was an instrument of low range in the 70s (Univox manufactured copies very cheap Fender, Gibson, Rickenbacker and Mosrite). I'm not necessarily a fan of vintage over-rated (I bought my bass $ 300) but then I'm amazed.
OVERALL OPINION
I use it for a few months after having a crush on a good opportunity on a site in the States. I had a bunch of instruments, but there it is one of my favorites. The value is insolent occasion. It sounds wonderfully with some adaptations (mechanical, microphones and bridge). This bass has a soul, she sings. on the other hand they are very very rare Univox had closed shop for a long time already.
