Almost everything you need: 22 types of overdrive / distortion, modulation effects (chorus, flanger, phaser, uni-vibe ...), multiple delays, wah wah, whammy + / - 1 octave noise supressor, reverb, microphone simulator ... Beware there is no amp simulator, which is not bad, at least the instrument and the amplifier are fully respected

We can not be easier! It is even disconcerting! Either you program yourself effects (3 patches in 10 banks) or used as 3 separate pedals boss. Effective, no complaints.

The delays are very successful, no complaints either about the effects of modulation. The flanger is particularly good I think. Fishing where it is for the distortion, a real massacre! It is completely flat, help the digital pedals prférez simple. I compared my TS9 tube screamer TS9 with the simulation of the ME-50, it simply has NOTHING to do. ME-50 The effect is laughable. Ditto for the distortions a bit tougher. Stack effect is ridiculous, as the BOSS DS-1. The only one I found drinking (and again) is the OD2. And yet I have tried on many amps: Fender Twin Reverb, Peavy Classic 50, Marshall JCM800, JCM900, JCM2000, VS100, Vox AC30. Nothing saveable for distos. I use a Godin SD 1H 2S.

For all that chorus, flanger, tremolo and especially delay (great), go there with confidence, it's worth it. on the other hand for distortion, go your way! Or rather buy a separate pedal ...

There are a lot of effects on this unit such as Delay, reverb, Ring modulation, tremelo, distortion, compression, vibrato, volume, etc...... No, this unit cannot be edited through a computer. It is not rackable as it is designed to be used on the floor. It is a combination of Digital and Analog effects. As for connections you get two inputs (1/4" and mini) a stereo pair of outputs and a phones/alt output jack.

UTILIZATION

The effects editing is fairly simple but of course not as simple as having all the effects you need in separate, easy to control stomp boxes. It can get pretty hairy trying to tweak effects on the fly being that there is a ton of options/effects in this one unit. For live use, the configuration is not all that great. You have to be able to read the words on the unit if you are not completely proficient with it so I suggest setting it up ahead of time and just moving through your presets live. Yes, the manual is clear enough and can help you solve any problem you might come acrossed.

SOUND QUALITY

I used this for my guitar and my Fender Rhodes. The sound quality was perfectly fine for live use (never used it in the studio). I loved using this on the rhodes mainly because you can't really see below the rhodes when you are playing and having a bunch of effects underneath can be hard to use. Using the ME 50, I just set up the presets to what I needed and could change between them at a push of a button while performing.

OVERALL OPINION

My favorite effect on this unit was the ring modulator. I had never owned one or used one before so it was a lot of fun when I got this unit. Since then I have sold this unit and bought a host of high end effects to replace it including the MoogerFooger Ring Mod which is much better in the way sound quality. Mainly though, this was a great unit to start off with being that you could have all the effects you need for an affordable price. I didn't really dislike anything about this unit but I did end up getting rid of it after I bought some excellent replacements. I give it a 8 out of 10 for sound quality. It was good, but there is much better out there. I owned a Pod 2.0 before this and I liked the ME 50 much more. For beginners or people who just need a lot of effects that doesn't take up a lot of space, the Boss ME50 is ideal. I would definitely buy it again if I were in that same boat.

SOUND QUALITY

Not convincing nor exciting. Like its small brother, the ME 20, it makes you want to connect your guitar directly to the amp or do something else rather than music... 3/10 because I'm generous.

OVERALL OPINION

It sounds cheap. Many other manufacturers offer much better products. If you want a Boss pedal you'll have to start at the GT10 and move upwards, otherwise it's not worth it.

Generally speaking I would say the Boss ME50 offers the following advantages:
- direct access to the parameters (no complicated menus, etc.)
- Comprehensive connections: stereo output on TS phone jack, line output with a tiny integrated preamp, line input to feed your favorite CDs...
- Very good tuner (much better than in most multieffects...)

I do miss a USB port to connect the unit to a PC. It's a must have in the DAW era.
***TIP***
You can plug a standard amp footswitch into the ME50 footswitch connector to control the mic simulation and the compressor (it worked with my Laney dual-channel footswitch). Useful...

UTILIZATION

Very easy to use, beginners shouldn't have any problem.

What about the user's manual? I haven't opened it except to set the expression pedal (see paragraph below)!!

Note: you'll have to calibrate your expression pedal if it suddenly turns on and off when you try to control the volume with your foot (see manual: push a button while you turn off the unit, blah blah blah). After that, set the switch value to "2" ("1": the switch is too responsive; "6": you'll have to depress like a madman).

SOUND QUALITY

Distortion effects: 2 or 3 are really nice (like a RAT or Tube Screamer) but most of them don't sound very good especially with a high gain! The metal distortions and the crunch sounds sound quite artificial.

Reverb effects: the hall verb is great, but the other two settings are unusable (cathedral, etc.)

Delay effects: nothing to say...

Wah-wah effect: quite good...

Compressor: ok. But you cannot set it correctly with only two parameters... Hard settings can easily generate feedback so I don't use the compressor.

OVERALL OPINION

I used it 2-3 years and just sold it a few days ago. The unit is alright and, of course, the sound also depends on the amp you're using. It will produce powerful sounds with a decent tube amp. It sounds better with high gain sounds than with clean or crunch sounds.

I recommend you to use it in manual mode in order to control the effects with a footswitch...Don't use the sound bank mode where effects are assigned to A1, A2, etc. Why? Because in bank mode you'll get a short silence every time you switch... You won't have that problem in manual mode.
