The BIG MUFF PI is one of the first effects produced by EHX. Memory, the first was the LPB. This is a big box of steel, not heavy as few filled, with three knobs, a foot switch and two jacks in / out reversed.

The Big Muff is analog, old school and really gross stripping. But with three knobs can make things pretty good.

UTILIZATION

In use, the Big Muff Pi made in Russia is surprising. Overall, without going into detail for now, know that this box of tricks can boost a gradual transition to saturation fuzzy dirty and violent. It's more than the saturation thickness, but less than a fuzz.

In practice, the three controls are relatively effective. The volume is by far the least sensitive. It operates completely on the overall volume of the effect (and its output) below the half. At home I rarely drops below 50% of volume.
SUSTAIN is quite simply the saturation level of the animal. A zero is a dirty boost which is not without interest when we know how to use it (I return below). TONE induced coloration of the sound by adjusting the spectrum: the left is fuzzy, mushy, and especially full of serious, while on the right is acidic, sharp, shrill at times.

I have not seen a manual in the box.

SOUND QUALITY

Returning to the importance of SUSTAIN knob.
At a minimum, this acts as the boost dirty which I mentioned above. This is really interesting dirty boost the crunch channel / OD of a good quality amp. For my part I use a Laney Chrome-O-Zone, a sort of supercharged LC30 ranging between VOX and Marshall but with more aggression in saturation, probably one of the best cleans all amps combined. In boost so dirty, play with the guitar volume and position of microphones is essential. This dirty boost is growing with a single microphone position on the handle or simply mixed with the middle (on a strato). Here it is expressive.
This allows an interesting progression: clean> clean + dirty boost BM> BM + OD dirty boost. With a background of chorus and reverb is a nice touch to the grunge / garage expressive.

By mounting the SUSTAIN canal clear, with the tone at noon, we enter in a register already more violent. This is where it becomes interesting to reduce somewhat the tone (TONE) of the pedal and test the microphone neck of the guitar. It's not bad at all.
This becomes even more biting, playing with the bridge pickup the guitar, especially if it's a humbucker, and the TONE of the Big Muff provides a real choice in the range of sounds.

Used with a low élecrique the Big Muff PI with our Russian friends, you can come very close to the sound of the famous HYSTERIA MUSE. Everything is a matter of hit and know-how of course. This pedal is excellent with an electric bass for the punk from the very large industrial.

OVERALL OPINION

The Big Muff is a legend in the world of effects for guitar / bass. It is legitimate.
Offered at a fair price given the relative simplicity of its circuit, the PI is a Russian icon that it is good to have in stock, especially in cases of chronic lack of imagination. I think it is more useful with humbuckers than with single well resolved. Still need a pedal ... yes, one more.

Very rich, with a strong personality, she will not replace a Roger Mayer or a Zvex but it is not justice to compare it to these monsters. If you need a fuzz / drive affordable and fun in your rig it is and not another. Why? Look at the price and sound, the answer is there.
