Shareware recording program for Windows
I am new at recording and I want to get started for fairly cheap . Is there a multi-track shareware (free) recording program for windows?

Yes there is:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Audacity is free Software, can record some dozens of stereotracks, mix them etc.
The very new beta has realtimepreview for fx and some more dramatical enhancements compared with the recent stable Version.

it's called cool edit free (d'oh ;) )
i haven't used it so far, because i bought the pro 2.0 version, but i do all my home-recording using cool edit.
