Published on 07/13/11 at 09:01The eventide Timefactor is a stomp box that has the capabilities of a much larger rack unit. It has 9 different delay models and a modestly featured looper.
Standard 1/4" stereo inputs and outputs, jacks for an expression pedal and external footswitch, and DC power jack. There are also switches to set the input and output levels to match the signal with an effects loop or guitar.
It can store 50 banks with two presets each giving you 100 user writable spots. Each preset can have two different delay times synced to a tap tempo in BPM or milliseconds with many subdivisions. There are filters available to tailor the delay sound and the list of features goes on and on.
UTILIZATION
With all the options available it is surprisingly simple to set up and get going. The pedal can easily function like a standard delay stomp box without getting into all of the other options. The manual is written very well and easily clears up any confusion about the features. In addition to the manual there is a very good support forum on eventide's website.
SOUND QUALITY
I use the timefactor in a guitar setup running through my amp's effects loop but I can definitely see this being useful as a piece of outboard gear for a live PA rig or in the studio. Being able to choose between a true bypass or relay bypass is great for people worried about their tone being altered. I keep mine set on relay bypass and I don't notice any ill effect on my sound. The ad/da conversion is very well done. All of the delays are very clear unless you want them to be murky and even the biggest mix levels never seem to muddy everything. Can't really ask for more.
My favorite sounds are the tape and band delays. The tape has a saturation control that allows you to determine how gritty the echo is. Add that to the filer section and you can get a great amount of different sounds that are perfect for adding a warm echo. The band delay has basically allowed me to remove my modulation pedals from my board. I pretty much never use modulation on distorted sounds and always use delay on clean sounds so having it in one stomp is great.
OVERALL OPINION
This is a beast of a delay pedal that may be overkill for some people. The amount of options can be overwhelming but you don't have to use them all. The standard delays alone are better than any other digital pedal I have ever owned. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a feature full delay or anyone who is concerned with sound quality above all else. The only issue I have ever had is with the power adapter. It is not as tight as others and can be bumped out causing a power outage. It reboots quickly and surprisingly my signal has stayed intact the few times this has happened. I have read others complaining to eventide about this so let's hope for a future fix,
