More than just being a manufacturer of high-quality drumsticks, Vic Firth also produces several accessories for drummers of various ages, styles, and preferences. One of their most popular accessories is the SIH1 Stereo Isolation Headphones.

I have my SIH1 for almost 5 years, and I mainly use it for monitoring and play-along during practice and live performances. Design-wise, this is pretty much Vic Firth’s isolation earmuffs that are fitted with stereo headphones and cables for use as a monitoring and listening device. The first time I wore it, it had quite a tight fit. It was a bit uncomfortable for me at first, but later on it loosened a bit and I got used to it. Its snug fit is an assurance that these headphones won’t slip off my head during performance. I wish the design of the earmuffs was less bulky and more compact. I look like I have two large black domes on the sides of my head.

At its price range, I wasn’t expecting a stellar sound quality similar to high-end models from popular headphone brands (Shure, Monster, Sony, Audio Technica, Sennheiser, etc). I look at it as blue-collar drummer’s headphones. The SIH1's sound quality is not at par with the Shure and M-Audio in-ear monitors that I have owned and used. It may not be high-end, but its sound quality is decent enough to be used for monitoring and listening. So if high sound quality is important to you, get the high-end, more expensive models. Otherwise, the SIH1 does its job of providing decent monitoring.

I also like the idea that the SIH1 is also an ear protection device. I can also use this just like a pair of earmuffs, in case I want to preserve and protect my hearing during practice. During performance, it also helps reduce ambient noise from the drums and other instruments. In terms of ear protection (plus our responsibility of adjusting the music at a safe and reasonable volume level), this is highly effective.

One thing to watch out for is the SIH1’s cable. After months of use, the stereo jack got broken, and I had it repaired by my techie guitar player. I also have a drummer friend whose SIH1’s cables failed, and he asked his repairman to replace it with a removable cable (which is a good idea that Vic Firth can consider). Another thing to look after is its frame. With regular use, it may look like it can break pretty easily. On my SIH1, the fabric-like material on the “hairband” part of the frame already has a few small tears.

Overall, the Vic Firth SIH1 is a decent set of headphones for drummers. It may not be the best-sounding headphones available, but it does its job well in monitoring and protecting our valuable hearing.

-How long you use it?

I use it for 4 months now, both for playing drums on the tracks I put on my mp3 player to that of the bass by connecting the headphone output.

The original volume of the headset is ideal for battery cable place is nicer compared to the coil. I use it often for the battery without necessarily playing with music in the headphones and the cable does not bother me. Excellent headphone cuts the user of the outside world: now you can send the playback sound in his ear muffs! And to record it the ultimate trs ^ ^ It means well, but not what happens in the piece (almost!).

For home studio: Royal! It can swing a click track and a background in the ears without a mic will not pick up anything from the headset! A guitar amp background (for example) no longer covers what it means to the headphone! No more recording head made of!

For then the drummers is the ultimate happiness: In game you can exploded cymbals and snare without realizing it, much as in recording. Everything is possible without sacrificing hearing. Also the sound pressure of the battery cover never playback in the headphone: It's all good, all beautifully s'quilibre ^ ^ And Hop! we can do without it!

CAUTION: The transmission to the ears what he sends, but without the lace! And yes the cost is not exactly linear nor even any APRS trs good but he is asked just to balance the sound, not excellent sound quality. In short OUT TO ANY QUESTION OR MIX WITH MONITORING!!

I was looking for a headset that allows me to hear my tracks properly witnessed while I play the drums and at this level it is very effective. 9 months of use:

It changed my life, it took several shock, etc. Has cras ... and it still works as well. I can play my battery click without breaking my ears either alone or in my group. I also use it for my records to isolate myself in my corner, it is comfortable and sounds good, but not a neutral sound.

1 ½ years of use:

The headphone is still alive but it starts dtriorer. It does much more trs on the head, it is much less comfortable and the plastic foam began removable. The insulation is also DGRAD but is still correct. I do not use more for the records, my ears are refined and the headphone does rpond over my expectations for the quality of sound.

I use this headset for 6 months in intensive use. That is, I have it on the ears about 6 hours per day. I am a gardener so very exposed to noise and outside.

In short, it's a headphone very efficient in terms of sound (about-22dB) but use an MP3 player, attention to max volume output, the headphone impedance is important. The reader must be able to leave a good level so that it can still be heard in case of constant noise.

Regarding the cable, it can be quite short in music use. And the output of the cable to the headset can be a bit fragile, handle with care.

Musically I do not think it's good for the monitoring, but it is correct to view the product price. Whole spectrum is there but the highs are attenuated as well as very large bass.

Regarding the overall quality of the product I would say that this is not a sustainable use that I do (mine, which is the second, almost died at the headband and pads). However it is a perfect choice for price and availability of the product to specifications.

So to summarize:
+ Excellent sound (about-22dB on average over the audible frequency range) of origin of a great brand that specializes in hearing protection
+ Quality of listening to the height of the headphone type and price
+ Resistant to moisture and screenings

Price

- Lifetime Limited headband very intensive use (greater than 5h/jour)
- Headband adjustable height only and shaking too, can become uncomfortable, but soundproofing assistance and may be perfectly suitable for small heads
- High impedance poorly suited for mobile use

I would do the same choice because its price and availability are unique to this type of product.

I use it for about 6 months.

I bought OCCAZ 'in good condition because I needed a headset that takes on the better head to play the drums, and with whom I would not need to set filters for hearing do not break my ears. Once tested (plugged into my hi fi good bill), I confess that I was very disappointed with the sound quality, no better than a pair of earphones for MP3 lambda. I did not expect ca.

Just disappointed with the sound, finally, it remains attached to the wall: when I play with music, I much prefer my first headphone (an Audio-Technica ATH D40fs), and I use Vic Firth Instead, when I play alone and / or with one click.

I've had these headphones for about 4 years now and they continue to be my go to headphones. Not only do they do a great job of isolation, they also have a great sound quality. They are perfect for drummers who want to hear a click track both live and while recording. I've had a ton of drummers use them in my studio and I have heard nothing but how much they love these. They are also great for anyone recording in a studio that wants to use a nice pair of headphones. I have a few other cheaper sets of headphones and looked into buying a more expensive set (Sonys, Sennheisers), but I kept coming back to these. A few things I don't like however is the framing for them - although mine is still intact, it seems they could break pretty easily. Also, if you wear them for a long amount of time they can become uncomfortable but that really happens with all headphones for me. For this price I think you get a great deal for a very nice pair of studio headphones.
